With a decent FTP program (I use "Core FTP") it's kind of easy to check and see if any files on the site have been updated that shouldn't have been just by checking the file dates...

Ag, I did find one of the forum files that had a modification date of just a few months ago, which it shouldn't have.  So I checked and it had a hack line in it.  I took that out, and just waited to see if it helped at all...

That would be nice, Ag.  Better than our 3 more feet in the last 2 days and 40-45 mph winds to drift and bank.  Big drifts and half frozen.  Lucky I hired a plow guy this year (last fall)...

Remix/Remaster of old songs
« on: October 01, 2019, 10:45:59 PM »
Hi

The other day I was thinking about how some of my older songs sound a bit...well...old. And I was wondering, with better technology and (hopefully) a better understanding of recording, mixing and mastering - if I could improve upon those compositions?

Like many people, sometimes The song doesn’t come out the way I had it planned out in my head. Whether that be that I couldn’t get the sound right l, mucked up the vocals, recording levels are off, or what have you.

So I went back to a song I’ve always liked but never felt the recording/mixing really come out the way I wanted.

The song is Dr Feelgood from the Michael Jackson KAE challenge from Sep 2009. So it’s ten years ago (wow). I dumped all the KAE tracks into MediaFire and uploaded to GarageBand on my iPad mini 2. I intended just to tidy it up and get the levels better. What I hadn’t banked on, was that I would end up re-recording most of the tracks (bass, drum, synths) again and ditch the original ones done on a cheap 30 year old Casio keyboard (with 8 preset sounds) and my faithful drum machine (Zoom something).

I kept the 5 guitar tracks and vocal and 2 backing vocals. Anyway, I had to relearn the song again but had so much fun with this. I’m really happy with this new recording and I plan to go back and each month revisit an old song from 10 years ago that month. It’s quite a challenge but most satisfying. Although I might not always get an improvement from the original song.

Anyone. If you want a listen, here’s the new version:

And here’s the Sep 2009 original:

Next song on my list is Fortune and Fame. Originally knocked up very quickly while finishing Dr Feelgood. As I didn’t have any new lyrics I recycled Dr Feelgoods but changed the chorus.

Dino said I had too much reverb on vocals originally and I agree. Maybe this version is better:

I also did a reprise:

Here’s the original from 10 years ago:

I also did a collab version of the song with BigB, Combobob and Sprocket:

Maybe I could release an EP with all the versions😁

I love playing about with songs, and slicing up and taking bits out and hearing how it sounds with some tracks taken off.

He’s a chilled out version I finished yesterday of Dr Feelgood:

My next song I’m gonna clean up will be Fall From Grace. It was a sport theme challenge, combobob dropped in a superb bass track but I never felt I nailed the production and my vocals were weak and sketchy.

I’ve tried reusing the existing kristal Project but I’m getting no joy with that software as my touch keys keep getting stuck, so I’ll (like I did my other recent revisited songs) transfer the tracks to GarageBand and work on.

Here’s Fall form Grace the 2019 mix. No new tracks on this one. Just remastering/mixing.

And here’s the original (the challenge was to only be allowed to use Kristals own VSTs).
