I now work from home so I don't really have any extra free time but one thing I've started doing is practicing my guitar during those conference calls that should have been emails. Got a good couple hours of playing in today.

What do I need, what should I want?
« on: May 21, 2018, 06:24:12 PM »
My old laptop, that was frankly rubbish when I bought it five years ago is reaching the end of its life.

I probably posted at the time I bought it, as it has the worlds slowest and most inadequate processor.  I have to shut everything non-essential down to run more than a couple of fairly low-rent vst's and forget about stuff like convolution reverbs.  The machine judders to a halt under stress.

My IT guy at work told me that I had bought junk and that I might as well throw it away as I'd never be able to do anything using audio on it.  Well, that was a challenge, and so although every recording session is a bit like bringing Apollo 13 home in terms of managing processing power, I would estimate that I recorded over 100 songs on it and also made a video.

Now I've had my money's worth from it, I think it's time to stop working around it and replace with something with more horsepower, but the recording websites are all gear-heads pushing super high tech and (super high price) equipment that massively exceeds what I need.  Here's a list of what I think I need to run:

- Windows 10
- Reaper 64 Bit
- EZ Drummer
- Various synth & keyboard VSTi's
- General VST's
- Hitfilm Express Video Editor

What would your suggestions be for the spec I need/ might want?

I am probably going to replace my aged interface at the same time so don't see any constraints there.

Thanks for your help in advance.

First off, Gaz, I would never suggest Windows 10.  Just do a Google search for "windows 10 phone home" to see some of the issues.  Also, it updates whenever it wants no matter what you're doing.  And, some updates cause issues with some drivers and certain programs.  I know, because I've made a fair amount of change fixing those issues for businesses who made the jump.

And because of all the constant phone home and update stuff, unless you have really fast and unlimited internet service, you'll be wishing you did.  I've been able to shut off most of the phone home and auto update stuff for quite a few people, but it's not real easy to do.  And the next update can turn it all right back on again.

Aside from that, you'll probably want a Core i5 or higher processor for audio and video (I use the latest core i7s), at least 12-16gb of RAM (32 is better, I use 64), and at least a 1tb drive running at at least 7200 rpm (the new SSD drives are really great, but cost a fortune for a decent size drive if you don't mind the cost, get one).  You can get a system with an AMD processor if it's fast enough, they're okay, but I generally prefer Intel.

But, if you just want something lower cost that will get the job done, you can go as low as a cor i3 with 8gb RAM and a 500gb drive.  That would handle most audio tasks and moderate video work.

For a lot of the businesses I deal with, and our own stuff, I do generally recommend manufacturer refurbished as opposed to new because of the huge cost difference.  And I've never had a complaint.  Check out Ebay, search for "laptop", and check the options for "Buy Now", "Free Shipping", and "Manufacturer Refurbished", then browse the pages.  And you can go with Win 10 if you want, or find a good one with Win 7 Pro (which I prefer).

Or, go to Walmart and drop the bundle on a new one...  ;D

I will 2nd what Mr. Joom said, and toss in a few thoughts....

If you are sticking to a laptop format definitely get a large screen. I bought 2 Dell Inspiron1750's a few years back for $300. Intel Core2Duo 2.11Ghz, 4gb Ram (just maxed them to 8gb this year) The 17" screen is nice, and with only 4gb memory I could run most anything really using Reaper & Win7 x64. And I am talking 2 instances of the SIR convolution Reverb, 3 Kontakt 5 Instruments while recording a guitar part. It WAS a strain, but it worked.

I also have a smaller 15" screened Dell lappy that is almost impossible to work on audio with.

I also buy used / refurbished when I can, or just build them, it is pretty easy to slap one together anymore IF you have the patience. My main system is a Core2Quad running at 3Ghz, 16gb Ram, a 1gb video card and 7TB of HDD space (1TB OS & Programs, and 2 3TB Loops BU and large sound banks) I was running Win7 x64 until 2 weeks ago when I got 2 deals on some older hardware, which made be revert to **GASP** Win Vista x64! So far so good on this.....

All of this to say you can get a LOT of machine for a great price if ya go the used market way. I have had my best luck with Dell's & HP's, most others have been hit or miss for me over the years.

Remember, for us audio guys more memory is the way to go!

Main System - HP Z600 w/ 3.2GHz 12 Core, 48GB Memory, Quadro 5800 Video Card, Delta66 / Omni Sound Card, Win7 x64, Reaper / Mixbus, IK Multimedia Full / Waves Full / P&M VIP, BiaB 2019, 1.3TB of Loops & Samples, 6 & 7 String Guitars, 4 & 6 String Bass, Jet City / B52 /Acoustic Amps

How do I get hold of copies of Win7?   I haven't seen it for years.

Are there any support or security issues if I'm connected to the net and downloading/ uploading etc.

They still sell Win7 all over the place, Gaz.  You can do a Google search, or check Ebay.  And at least on Ebay you can buy refurbished computers with Win 7 installed.  You'd want Win 7 Pro.

Support or security issues where, how, for what?  You mean with Win 7 or Win 10, or something else?

I purchased Win 7 Home just last year Gaz, it was a download only version, but the license is legit, paid about $60 AUD if i recall, no issues so far. Win 10 should be classed as Spyware IMO

Absolutely, Buster, forgot to mention that.  10 is terrible, 8 is even worse.  Can't tell you how many systems I've installed "Classic Shell" on for people (8 and 10 both), just so it kind of works like 7.

If 11 (whenever that comes out) is anything like 8 and 10, I might be going to Linux in 2-3 years.  But I think I'll just keep 7 around till I don't compute anymore...

i'm a cheapskate, so i often go low-end, but that depends largely on how hard you use hitfilm, 12gb or more of rambo  ::-> and get an extra monitor, go dualsies... don't listen to me.

Wouldn't downgrade to a gaming tower, Ag.  Not with the latest core i7 processor.  A 1tb main drive, two 2tb internal secondary drives, and four external drives (2-4TB).  64gb RAM.  Best video card on the market.  3 monitors (32" main, and 2 24inch).  Water cooled system with 6 fans.  Few more extras.  When you do what I do, with 583 installed programs, average gaming system won't cut it.

Secondary system is only corei7 with 32gb RAM and two internal 2TB drives with one external 3tb drive.  But still a little bigger than my 3 laptops.  Wife has a few good ones, too.

Windows 10 works, but it's not as clean and usable as 7.  I have clients that are on 10, but most are sorry they moved up from 7 just to stay 'current'.  All depends on what you need to do and how you use it.  You may never have a problem with it, but if you use your computer very much for very long, I'd have to bet that at some point you'll have at least one issue.  But, there is a difference in the things you may or may not run into with certain hardware or software if you're only using one system yourself for basic things, as opposed to having to deal with 100+ systems being operated by a couple hundred people on a regular basis.  I see things some people wouldn't...

Yup true that so it’s a matter of needs so to say when it comes to w10
So like for me I just use to record and pay bills and some surfing . 95% of time I’m using the the IPhone to dork around buy and shop lol

And I said gaming tower because they look cool as crap haha but by no means would I say buy one prebuilt !!  You can make it faster , stronger , able to leap tall buildings in a single bound ! Lol

And I was serious about this super card something thing lol I seen it and read it just can’t remember what it was otherwise lmao 😜

Just thinking out loud if I were back tracking in software ( which is a Matter of perspective) for the main purpose of recording I’m thinking to keep that pc off line in fear of corruption. You know porn sites and all lol but when does support run out and what would it take to keep it secure if you use it for every day travels among the web if the world ?

Certainly I don’t have a clue and now I bow before greatness O’master
Oh by the way I picked the lock on bar door soooo if I’m acting stupid tell me to shut up ! Lol

If you were able to pick the lock on the bar door, there's no way anyone here could say you're acting stupid, Ag.  ;)

I used to always build my own systems, but this one I ordered as a custom build 3 years ago.  Got it for not much more than all the parts would have cost, and the builder had a good rep, so I went for it.  And a couple months ago I ordered a replacement mother board, processor, memory, and other parts in case anything starts failing on it.

Anyway, like I've always told customers/clients/family/friends - if you like what you have and it works, good enough.  And, in my business, I don't mind when clients buy something I advise them not to, because I always get a call and get to bill.  Win win...  ;D

I wish I had your smarts . Still can’t figure two HD’s but to my defense I keep thinking accessing it should be bloody easier lol then that pain in the ass formatting and it’s wtf partitioning  .

Someone should come up with a better system lol
