Wasn't meant to be a hint but if your friend had tickets to a show somewhere near his place, anď if I'm in the neighborhood anyway at a coincidentally opportune time....😉

BiaB 2017
« on: January 07, 2017, 12:18:48 AM »
Last year I had one of the luckiest streaks I have had in....forever. During this I won some BiaB software & PG Music Cash and decided to go full out and grab the newest 2017 version, the 49 pack, and the Xtra Styles 2.  (-!)

I received the HDD & DVD's yesterday, and from what I have seen so far it is a leap ahead of 2016 with it's GUI improvements AND new VSTi sforzando which plays SFZ files.

As soon as I get it installed on the Studio system I will give ya folks a run down of it. I KNOW that some folks think it is cheating, or should not be used in contest of "serious music", etc (and I am NOT referring to folks on this forum, just musicians in general over the years) but 2016 showed my HOW much it has improved over my 2011 version, and the 2017 version has stepped it up yet again.....which makes it fair game, just like loops or VSTi pianos or organs.

Prepare to be dazzled by my lack of knowledge!  )(?  :P  8)

 8) Haters are gonna hate ;)

I have and old version of BiaB (midi) , it's pretty sophisticated imho. Wes can really make it work ... Jazz chords.
  Cheating? nah , I've yet to use it , other than for phrase analysis , and farting around. I haven't  used VST's in the past but not above it in the future. Many years ago I liked to use midi for 100% of what I did but , today I try to do everything live .... well multi tracked. Pretty much using the DAW as a straight up tape recorder now days. ...... That's me .... everyone can do it different. If I can capture a good minute of say a drum track I can loop the heck out of it. Same with any instrument so , isn't it all the same? :D

I think there's only a problem when people say they've played the track when they've only created said track. 1 minute of recording looped is still having played that track. Songwriters do it all the time. They'll write 3 verses but only one chorus sung 3 times. Looping, really. Taking the  lyrics from 3 songs singing it to a BT of a fourth using another melody, is not writing a song, you've simply created one. Generating music using midi could be considered writing if you added each note for note. Using a program to manipulate or generate the musical lines should be seen as creating. Either way, you're building a song, making music. Canned or real, doesn't matter.

I sometimes use version 12......  ::)
If I need a latin drum track (listen to Chilli, chilli), for example.
Taking the midi tracks from BIAB and playing around with them makes them mine, in my opinion.
Sometimes, I even take midi tracks from the Interwebs and mess with them. Not had much success there, though....

Obviously, having the resources to add good sample sounds makes a big difference. Might even have a go at making some of my own, just for fun......
I must learn more about sfz files, and how to use them better, with Sonar....  :-X

Would love to play around with later version of BIAB, but prices are high, even on the used market......

Any suggestions for a less expensive, decent version, Mr. Smurf?

The smarter you are , the smarter BiaB is , it gets deep. When saving a file , also saving in mid format will give you something to load into Sonar and further edit , manipulate the file :D  It truly is a Band in a Box unless you get carried away , then it becomes a orchestra ;)
