The 2016 Adventure....So Far....
« on: March 14, 2016, 01:23:52 PM »
It has been a good week for once, around the studio at least.  :)

Friday upgraded the Inspiron 560 from a Core2Duo 2.93GHz to a Core2Quad 3.0GHz with 12mb Cache at 1333Mz. 24hour stress test 100%. Now the system is maxed MB wise with this & 8Gb Memory.

Saturday installed a new Corsair CS450M power supply and 2 2TB HDD beside the 750gb OS drive.

Sunday morning installed my "new to me" M-audio Delta66 / OMNI sound card...I guess this combo will be with me until the end. These units are around 16 years old, but are still the most rock solid cards I have ever used, even under Win7 X32 & x64.  ;)

Sunday evening fixed the E-Mu 1212 card that took a crap on me, some cold solder joints. Been in my spare system & running fine passing audio since last night. Patch Mix works a lot better under XP than Win7.

Today started the "nuke & pave" of the 750gb OS drive, and then a full clean reload of Win7 x64 & all of the studio software. In the mean time I have cloned over to the spare 500gb so I can still keep working.

Next up I need to get the 2 external Ultra USB cases ready for their HDD by sorting thru the 750gb's that are in there & getting them stored. When done they each will have x2 2TB HDD for a total of 8TB. One is for RAID backup, the other is for backup of audio & video projects, my stupidly large sample libraries  :o, VST & VSTi software with codes, and my regular full backups.

These low cost Ultra USB 2 cases have impressed me so far. After about a year with them I have only had a handful of dropouts when transferring large files of 70gb & up at times. Yes, USB 2 is NOT the best way for this, but at $20 a pop shipped over 2 sales I can live with it..... ;)

Then a new system case with access to the front bays so I can use my hot swap drive bays...it makes playing with Linux SO much more fun!  ;D

After that I need to start looking for a couple 24" or 27" monitors for a dual setup, already have the ATI 1gb card for this.

Then the studio system SHOULD be done.......it will take to the end of 2017, but hey, who says this was going to be easy or cheap?!  :P

Re-building from ground zero is such a pain.....8)

Yup...  :P

You've been busy, Smurf, and it all sounds good.  Funny how we 'horders' have to have so much storage space, isn't it?  My hard drives are like the rest of my place, I never throw anything away - on purpose.  Besides all the sound/loop libraries, I still have the BillBoard Top 100 from 1946-2005 sitting on a couple drives.  And client projects going back at least 15 years.

The whole build sounds like a good stable system.  And I still use USB 2 a lot.  My main system has both 2 and 3 built in, and I added another 2.0 card.  The two hubs weren't enough.  ???

I still need to replace two 24" monitors, and have been going back and forth between 24 or bigger.  24" seems to be about right for size, and easy viewing without a lot of eye scanning.

Bet you'll like having a full studio system and up and running again...  ;)

You know, this time it was not so much getting it up & running as in just getting it up & maxed out for the foreseeable future!

Since the move in Nov I have entered 2 TTM ODC's, completed 5 tracks, and am eyeballing re-doing some of my stuff from the 90's to early 2000's....I made a conscious decision to NOT let the hardware screw me this time, thus picking items that I KNOW are solid for the build.

Since Dec I have bought IK Multimedia's Total Studio 3, ReValver Mk III.5, Melodyne, and 2 Instruments. All the software was from eBay at VERY reduced prices since everyone wants the new Sampletank 4, Revalver 4....all the newest toys. That is fine with me, I am familiar with the old stuff & will take the deals!

I have close to 1TB of just Sample Libraries, not including my Soundfonts (yes they are still a great sounding format!) and Loop Libraries....man, I have a BUNCH a bunch of sorting to do over the next few months! LOL

As for monitors, I have a 24",  but have decided that I really do need dual because of all the VSTi's & Midi I am working with lately. There was a seller on eBay called liquid8technology.com that had a bunch of Grade A (according to them) 27" Asus monitors for $100 + $20 S&H, no cables or stand included. 2 of those & a VESA stand would be less than $300 for the setup, but I have other things to get first! LOL

OK, back to setting up the 500gb so I can get back to the ODC...fun time!

Yup, you can't beat going with what you know and what works for you.  Just makes sense.

And yes, dual (or triple) monitors are pretty well mandatory for video, audio, and even photo work now.  Just makes things so much easier and speeds up work flow.  I have to pick up a couple new monitors and laptop, but have had too much else going on to shop and order yet.

Looking forward to 90's and up tune remakes...  ;)

Congrats on the speakers, Smurf, but sucks on the drives.  ???

Don't suppose they can be rejuvenated with something as simple as a:

chkdsk c: /f /r

Hope you can at least save everything...

Nope Mr J, I tried that as a last resort....I think I just wore them out. All my latest drives were Hitachi, so I am thinking of going back to WD, still have not replaced the internal drive yet...been busy with the studio setup.  ;D

The "new" Core2Quad is running scary well. With 8gb of memory I can run a TON of VSTi's and even Reverb's with very few hiccups. This motherboard can only hold 8gb of memory, but I have only found MB that are 775 sockets that hold 8gb...maybe a limitation of the format? Not sure, so more research is needed in this area.

The new LG 27MP36HQ B monitor is AWESOME! It is an IPS? type, never heard of this type, but you can see this when standing & playing almost as well as sitting in front of it. Colors are crisp & edges are clean.

The only problem is that the stand is REALLY "bouncy"...not really weak, but "flimsy" as in really swaying when the table is ran into....but ya know what? I see another one in my future for sure, along with a VESA mount. Decently thin bezel, so two side-by-side will be great.  ;)

The Fostex 641 sound fantastic (wrote about it in the April TTM ODC thread....well, hi-jacked). I forgot the pictures of the old-vs-new setup, but will get them in this thread ASAP.

Next up, Acoustic Treatment, then a "grot box", then a new chair.....yes, me bottom needs some love also!  :P

I tore into the E-Mu 1212 card & got it fixed, so it's Right Output is working solid now, no more shorting. BUT...for some reason a cable has to be plugged in only half way to get a balanced stereo signal....more than likely the jack, but it is not worth the time for me at the moment. This is true with a TR or TRS.

Onward & Upward! 8)

I hear ya ag!  :P

As for the winning the PM641's, I guess I worded that wrong.....I meant that I won the Bid on them thru an eBay auction, $215 shipped...and these things look & sound brand new.

Sorry about that Ag! :o

And I wonder if this could be moved to the Blog section, I did not realize that this was in the Computer section until now, and it looks like it might go a little off topic...and I NEVER do that, 'eh?

Thank You Mr. White, this is appreciated!  :D

As promised, here is some pics of the old / new setup.

OK, after having a play with the new Fostex 641's for this month's TTM ODC, I have to say that I am in love with music all over again!  ;D

Well, OK, maybe not THAT drastic, but man, these things are flat out awesome. The separate Mid just brings out SO much more in CD's & .wav's....and shows the flaws of mp3 / ogg's very clearly, even on the best settings. Flacs & Apes sound ALMOST as good as the .wav...close enough that you REALLY need to focus & listen...the upper mid's / highs are a little edgy.

And IMHO, the Ape's still beat out the Flacs. The Flacs have a slightly stronger/smoother low/mid area, but for vocal range & up the Ape's sound way better to my ear on these monitors.

The best part is that these are as solid at reproducing Mid's as my ATH-40x headphones, something that all my 2-ways just could not do....outstanding!  ;) I can finally mix on speakers 50% of the time now, instead of the 10/20% that I have been doing for the last decade...this will be fun! Plus, I have a decent neighbor that is half deaf & cranks his music, so I'm good on that front for now. :P

A funny side note. Once I got the room re-arranged I sat the 4n's on top and seen just how close the drivers were. I was pretty certain before that the PMO.4's were just the Mid-High section of the 641 / 841's, but now I am sure....check the pictures & see what ya think.  :o

As soon as I find out if I have any type of warranty left on these I will open them up & see how large the internal "box" is. Should be interesting!  ;)

With the room re-arranged & the new speakers I am in need of a monitor selector, stands / some kind of ISO for them & some treatment, now more than ever. Not as sexy as a new instrument or piece of software, but just as "necessary"....at least for myself. And, of  course, some "before / after" stuff for sure.  ;)

As BigB use to say, "Onward & Upwards!"  8)
