Being almost halfway through the month, we'll set the deadline for March 15, 2020.

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / Jan '19 ODC voting and results
« on: February 06, 2019, 06:42:14 AM »
Story Time
I want a story.

Now some of you are brilliant instrumentalist.
Some are good lyricist.
Some can sing a little.
Some would like to take part in a challenge but don't have all those talents.
Some may just have an idea in their head.

So, if you have tune or a word or two or even a story that you can't put to rhyme, just say so and we'll take it from there.
You can either do it on this board by showing what you've got and asking for help or by private message to anyone you think will help you.

It does not matter if someone  helps 1,2,,3 or as many others as they want. The contest will be decided on what each individual decides is the best musical story.

The winning song will then have one of it's participants choose between them who is  to set the next challenge.

Now you get to vote for your favorite song. Looking for individual vote from each participant.
Listen to the songs below and PM your votes to me or email to papagee1 (at) live.ca listing the songs in order of your preference. Entrants do NOT need to vote themselves last but you must vote.
Voting closes Saturday Feb 9, results on Sunday

1. Andy Social January KAE Challenge
2. Fiction - Redjoker and Gazebo
3. Freezing Cold Walking - Gazebo
4. Ghost Ship - Cottonwood ft papaG
5. A Day In The Life - papaG and Joom

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / Rise Above - June 2018 challenge
« on: June 03, 2018, 01:16:02 AM »
This month's challenge should be easy. The idea came from my own personal catastrophe this weekend. I locked up some of my tools on site before I left work on Friday afternoon. I trust its safe enough and normally it would be. Saturday morning I received a call, telling me the place burned to the ground. My tools are gone along with the next few weeks of work. Insurance will cover the tools eventually but I'm out a few thousand dollars of work that doesn't get replaced. This job is over. I'll be scrambling to try to reschedule the next projects earlier but its not promising. The upside for me is, I didn't lose 10,000 hogs in the fire like the client did.

So the challenge for this month is to write a new song about a (somewhat) devastating personal catastrophe and how you overcame it. Put a positive spin on it, the silver lining. If your life has been uneventful in that way, I guess you'll have to write a fictional piece.

Also, your song must include two key changes. These changes must be 3 semitones each and cannot revert to the original key. Example, if the songs starts in the key of G, your next change would be Bb and then C#. Minimum limit for each key change will be 16 measures. No time limit on the song and loops, samples, collabs, instrumentals are not restricted.

Deadline will be 28 June 2018 @7:53 am

Blame Neil for your struggles this month.  (-!)

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / April '18 ODC - SPRING BREAK!!!!
« on: April 02, 2018, 04:25:13 AM »
The theme for this month's challenge is "Spring Break". This can mean one of three things to you.

1. Bikinis and beaches and beer.... 8) Fort Lauderdale anyone?

2. Winter is finally leaving and we're tired of minus friggin' cold....  :o

3. The suspension on your old jalopy that you are too cheap to fix has finally given up and nearly ended your life due to your obvious lack of attention to maintenance.... ::)

Last month I noticed a few entrants chose to use spoken words in their entries and we're expanding on that concept.

Starting now, write a story song about "SPRING BREAK", in any style or genre. Your "lead vocal" must be spoken, not sung though it may include singing parts. Song length must be at least 3 - 4 minutes. Any means to create the music allowed, (fart in a jar, Karministicalize your vacuum cleaner, make your wife angry and record the response...)

My favorite example of a story song is Red Sovine's Teddy Bear, but rap, hip hop, new country crap, have got their own examples.

Deadline is 27 April, 2018 11:59 pm. Saskatchewan time, of course.

Works in Progress / Album....
« on: February 07, 2018, 04:16:19 PM »
Thought I'd share a little of what I've been working on for the last 2 weeks. The song choices are the client's and I had to learn the songs (all but one) and attempt to interpret them to fit his style. My lead vocal will be replaced with his. So far he's happy in spite of some of the less than perfect bits.
This compilation is a bit of an exercise to see how my mixes/recordings compare from one tune to the next, and song placement on the album. Three more songs will be added yet.

Have yourself a listen, comment if you like.
