Band In A Box / Band In A Box 2019 is now out....
« on: December 07, 2018, 06:18:51 AM »
OK, this year I told myself I was updating to the Audiophile version of BiaB, but once again I went overboard on other things so.. >:(..I guess I will wait another year for it.

This release, along with the 49Pak and XtraPak6, has a LOT of styles & features that I am really excited about.. :o...the new Rock/Pop/Country styles have more BG vocals, and they are continuing to bring in "new blood" to perform on the styles, so the feels are more up to date.

Now the program is 64bit (YES!  ::->) and it has a pretty cool VST feature I am looking forward to using.  ;D

Overall, for the 3rd year in a row, they have released a good one!  8)

OK, down to the final equipment & studio shuffle...???..just bought the Hotone Binary Cab and have these thoughts that I posted to the store where I bought it... ;)

=====

OK, Here is my thoughts after about 11 hours of using the box thru an amp, small PA, and Direct Recording (what I mainly bought it for)...

It is SO much easier changing the IR's in the box than trying to change IR's on the screen in software in my DAW, which is the big reason I bought it. Grabbing a knob instead of a mouse keeps me "in the flow" much better. There are a TON of solid sounding IR's here. All the IR's are 768kb in size, but I did not have any problems loading my old Recabinet 2 series or newer OwnHammer IR's into the box.

Plus, the Mic emulations are spot on. I can say that because as I sit here I own a 57,58, e609, and a MD421 . I have used them all for  years now and can say without a doubt that the matching mic emulations in this thing are 99.99% correct in tone thru out the X-Y-Z settings. Also, the X-Y-Z Mic Positions using these mic's is flat out uncanny. I have NO problem saying these 4 mic's are correct to real life.  ;D

As for the Power Amps, I feel the 6L6 models are close, but I don't have a real tube amp sitting here to compare the 2 ATM....I would say they are also solid models of the amps they represent in this box.

Now for what I consider is the bad....the thing does NOT come with a power supply or any type of instructions!  >:(  $150 and you can not supply a power supply? Or even a small quick start card? This is the reason I subtracted a star.

In the Hotone Binary software, when you are in a list, you can NOT use your arrow keys to move up / down or the Enter key to select the item you are on.. ::)..you HAVE to use a mouse which slows using the software down.

The IR's are not grouped together, there are Bass Cabs mixed in with Guitar Cabs thru out the list....nit picking I know, but still..... ;)

Tho turning a knob on the Box is reflected in the Software, they do not "sync" at all. Thus you can make an adjustment in the software, but as soon as you turn the knob the setting will jump to where the knob is....very annoying! They should have used encoders for the controls.

The Room Verb that is supplied in the box has too long of tail, it is more of a Small / Med Hall than a Room, and even on the lowest settings the tail is annoying.  :o

These are not deal killers, but small things that need addressed in a future update (soon I hope, Hotone are ya out there?!  ;D)

Is it worth $150? For ME I say yes, but it could be better. I like it slightly better than the Radar, and tho I have not played with the JOYO R series R-08 CAB BOX that is out now, I think the Hotone Binary Cab was priced OK.  I will update in a month or so...... 8)

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / Re: November 2018 ODC - No More War
« on: November 09, 2018, 03:18:07 PM »
I really feel that everyone that is a regular on here cares about all the others on here, sometimes life situations do not allow use to voice that either in a timely matter, or "out in the open"....rest assured folks DO care!

As for this challenge I started with a 80's New Wave style that went no where, but it had it's moments. Today I hit upon my typical Rock / Hard Rock style......lets see what happens!

General Recording Dicussions / Re: 4 track cassette recorder issues
« on: November 09, 2018, 02:30:15 PM »
I had a Yamaha MT40 4 tracker & the Tascam 8 track cassette back in the day, and they worked fine for the time.  ;D  Wrote a lot of songs with them, and still have a couple huge boxes of tapes here.

You can find these units on ebay all the time, IF you are willing to take the chance.  :o  The biggest problem is the cassettes themselves, more than likely the tape is stuck to itself inside the housing, maybe even to the housing itself. you really need to be careful with these old tapes.  ~:)  There are units that will unwind / reverse the tapes VERY slowly so they do not shred / stick to the next layer, or you can just use a pencil & wind them by hand....this is what I did and it worked fine most times, but I still lost some due to the tape sticking to itself.

Good Luck with the project, there is always surprise tid bits lurking on the tapes for sure!  8)

Other / MConvolutionEZ Reverb Software
« on: November 04, 2018, 05:15:37 AM »
Hey folks, the MFreeFXBundle from Melda has always been a great set of plugins At Our Favorite Price Point™, but this time around they have added a Convolution Reverb that is flat out easy to use.

I have been a user of the S.I.R reverb software since....before baseball....lets just say a LONG time. The MConvolutionEZ software is VERY close to replacing it ATM for a few reasons..

1. The Main Controls you need are right in front, no "unnecessary" controls to be found.  ;D

2. The CPU hit is much less than S.I.R., which is always a good thing.  ~:)

3. The included IR's sound great  ::->

4. The Price  (-!)

It is included in the MFreeFXBundle , and in that collection there are some really nice compressors, etc.

Hope This Helps!  8)

.....and I feel the last few challenges are going over old ground.

We have been doing this for a LONG time, so keeping it fresh and energizing is really difficult at times. It always picks back up for everyone....and it always seems to slow around this time of year some.

This is a good challenge W2L & some good tracks you two....I pray that everyone does not have a sad real-life story related to this months challenge.....

And from the main page....

"With version 1.1, you can also load your own impulse responses (IR)"

Now THAT got me attention! I have been blessed the last couple years to have some real heads & an ISO cab to play with, but FOR ME a lost of the amp sims get closer to what I want to hear....

Thanks for the great find Gazebo, this looks very promising! 8)

(and as a PS, it had been a long time since I was on the Bedroom Producers site, I forgot how much I like that site!  :P )

General Recording Dicussions / Re: Recording videos?
« on: October 06, 2018, 12:28:52 PM »
Why thanks you Mr. Neil, there are a lot of us around here!  :P

I feel that EVERY person on this forum is a pro at something, and when the advice is shared we ALL profit from it....unlike some places where they will do it FOR you instead of telling you HOW to do it....does that make sense?

Anywho, I have wanted to try me hand at a video, but it never gets past the set up / record / playback / oh look at all the cool effects I can use on the clip!  :P  8)

A quick search brought up a ton of stuff, but these look the most promising...

https://www.musicindustryhowto.com/how-to-make-a-music-video-for-beginners/

https://diymusician.cdbaby.com/music-promotion/6-tips-to-making-a-no-budget-music-video/

The 2nd one from DIY Musician includes some behind the scenes videos to show how they did it. Tho I am in the "want to make one, but have not got around to it" club I see a lot of info, both good & bad out there. The folks here have gave you some solid advice so far, and I would like to add something I have found in my amateur photography & green screen playing around...

We are working I 2 dimensions. When lighting a scene you MUST make sure to do some kind of back lighting on you / the subject to separate them out from the background. Something as simple as a 60-100watt clip on lamp shining on the hair or shoulder from above & the rear will help pop the subject away from the background.

As for camera / camcorder / cell phone, I am a believer in use what ya have NOW to get started, and then as you get deeper into it you will discover what you really need for YOU, not what someone else says you need.

Good Luck with it, you are a braver soul than I am!  :P  8)

Thanks guys, and good catch agr.....that was the wrong track, the correct one is up now! And yes, the tuning was C# which put it in F# when I tracked. It did feel comfortable to "sing" in that key for sure.

Ya know, ya get bored and try to spice practice up, so I have been going thru a LOT of tunings. I have a little book that is fun to run thru that has a ton of various tunings..... ;D

I'll attach it to this post for ya..... ;)

Thanks again folks!  8)
