35mph winds, gusting to 50.  Lost power for a few hours, had to run the generator.  Back now, but don't know for how long.  Freezing rain/snow/sleet.  Not a nice day...

Me too RJ, I brew my own beer and distill spirits (making a really fine bourbon these days) and have just started wine making. My peach wine is a peach, as  we wine makers say, very drinkable, with a hint of peach. Can't remember tho last time I was drunk,  not because I was drunk, just too long ago

I'm an avid homebrewer with a few beers on tap at all times.  Having said that, I hate even feeling tipsy let alone drunk.  So I'm like Whitestrat in that I may have 1 or 2 over the course of an evening but that's it.

Never been much of a drinker. I don't abstain, but 1 or 2 drinks, over a couple of hours, is more than enough for me....
You might be right, neil....  :P

Alcohol is so very "college" for me.  I drank a lot of it back in college.  Didn't drink any in HS. After graduate school, it became sort of ho-hum.  Now, occasionally I'll have a beer at a restaurant with dinner. I don't even keep them at the house.  Now, Diet Coke on the other hand...

Used to drink soda (pop) a long time back, but got so I didn't care for anything carbonated.  I do miss a good Root Beer once in a while - with ice cream...

Yeah, but I gave up alcohol back in the early '70's.  Been coffee ever since.  4-5 cups an hour when I'm home, 2-3 an hour when I'm out working.  Every place I work knows they get a better deal if they keep coffee handy...

Well, I think I've decided on a song.  Just waiting now to see if we're doing this...  (-!)

2
Buster, that was great, I've enjoyed that song since it came out.  I'm jealous, though, I haven't been able to howl, break, or go Falsetto since I was in my 20's.

As W said, that's exactly what we're talking about.  Great fun, with very little work involved, and something we all do in the car anyway.

Also as W mentioned, there are lots of places to find backing tracks.  YouTube is a pretty good one, and if you do a Google search for "download youtube video mp3" you'll find lots of ways to download the video as an MP3.  But you can also buy good backing tracks for as little as $1 in various places, just do a Google search for "karaoke 'song name' 'song artist' download".

And again, enjoyed that...  :)

Sorry, this is somewhat off-topic...

But wouldn't it be nice to have a challenge of challenges?... That is, take e.h the winners of the last five years and ask people to vote between those.

That would definitely be interesting, Spiral.  Had never thought of that...

As well as singing to tracking track, are we permitted to add guitar, keys, or whatever too?

Any way you want to hang it, OT...  ;)

So, this little challenge stems from a thread started by BoneDigger, and a suggestion from Way2lon.  And as it happens, is based on one my favorite fun things to do.

Expanding on BoneDigger's question (what was music like in your school years?), what was one of your most inspirational songs during that time?  What is one of your favorite songs of the period that really made you want to sing along, and even learn to play an instrument?

Not necessarily the favorite, but just one among many that really struck that "I wanna be a musician/singer" nerve when you first heard it.

This challenge is for you to answer those questions with a song.  With what we here at TTM call a "Cheater".  Very basically, a cheater is karaoke.  You pick a song, find a backing track, and sing along.  While recording.  There are backing tracks out there for 98% of all songs ever done, so it shouldn't be too hard to find yours.  But they can cost up to $1.

This isn't meant to take the place of any other challenge in progress, but on the other hand it shouldn't take much time.  The only work involved is clicking record, and singing along with one of your favorite old songs.  And when aren't we singing along with one of favorite old songs anyway?

My feeling is that there shouldn't be a vote or a winner for this, because the main objective is for everyone to have a good time and bring back some good old memories.  Seems to me that for something like this, I'd have to agree with the song line (Everyone's a winner, baby, that's no lie).

But, as challenges go, people may want to vote on their favorite.  Up to the crew.

What does everybody think?  No specific time limit, maybe up to a month or so.  Pick one of your favorite school days songs, grab a track, and sing it.  Just like we did back then.  Well, maybe not "just like" we did back then.  :P

And hopefully this won't be just Way2 and myself, it would be great fun to get everybody in on this one.  Remember, no work and very little time required for this.

So, anybody?  (-!)

Just have to find the time to actually do it lol

That's the nice thing about cheaters, Neil, they're quick, easy, and fun.  Grab a backing track, cut loose, post...  (-!)

I'm with Joom on the HS years music but  I had an idea of doing some kind of 'cheating challenge. Along with myself and Joom I know of at least 3 more members who would enjoy something like this. We could request of those taking part, a song which we think would challenge them. There's a good amount of pre recorded backing tacks out there or we could ask one of the musos to help us out with a backing track........ Just some thoughts to sling at you and see if there is any interest.

That would be fun, W.  There are backing tracks out there for just about everything now.  And maybe some of the newer members who have never done Cheaters would like to join in.  Some of us would be going further back in time than others, but that's cool.

Set up anything you like...

Ricky Nelson, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Connie Francis, Everly Brothers, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin, just to name a few I remember.

I enjoyed all of it back then, and still do when I hear something from the period.  I learned piano early, but started Alto Sax (and guitar) by the time I hit HS, and I tried to copy all of them.

I'd love to do some Cheaters from back then...

My mom was a biology professor, my dad worked at NASA, all us kids are various types of engineers so I'm pretty much into that stuff too.

 ;)

Didn't know that, either, Red.  I've been into that stuff since I was a kid.  A few years ago I started a forum for that kind of discussion.  I called it "The 42 Forums", because according to "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy", 42 is the universal answer to everything.  The forums never took off, and I eventually shut them down.  Probably wouldn't have worked out anyway, my views on the universe don't follow standard thinking.

And now I've hijacked Ag's thread...  :-[

Hmmmm...wonder if anyone has copyrighted "lawyers gonna sue" yet??
 8)

Hope not...

People write songs
Every day of the week
And the lyrics can't always
Be unique

Sometimes the words come out the same
But what are you gonna do
People just gonna keep on writing songs
And lawyers gonna sue

 (-!)
