If you look really carefully you can see the three sections on the back, particularly after the first coat. If you were to look at it end on the centre is a slightly different colour, but the face is a pretty close match....if that makes sense.

The “x”, if I’m seeeing the same thing, is on that centre piece.....different grain....

Some more pics from yesterday....

After sanding down the rough finish on Saturday night I did more colour coats. Came up pretty nice. Then it was onto the 600 and 800 grit for the neck and go over the body again before clearcoat. Also removed the taping on the binding and razored the excess paint and glue from the tape off the binding, and sanded the paint edge with 800 grit.

Now to be fair, I like the colour/finish....but it wasn't quite what I expected to see at this point. Maybe after the clearcoat and polishing it'll come up different, but for now it seems a little less "solid" than I was expecting, if you know what I mean. It's not a shortage of coats let me tell you :P

Possibly I did something wrong..... but I still think it looks pretty good....
Also noticed a few blemishes in the paint job which can't be fixed without major effort...luckily it's on the bottom side so it won't be so obvious lol

Anyway, on to the clear coat....

Went on really nice on the neck, makes it look stained without the stain :P
The body however didn't seem to go so well... got it a little thick in places :(
Having said that, the finish is, once again, rough so it'll need a sanding before the next clear coat goes on, so maybe it'll level out at that point. Wait and see I guess.....

It's all a learning process - nothing is wasted, even mistakes  ;D

Looking good, Neil!  8)

Did you not give it an undercoat? Sometimes the full colour doesn't come out unless there's an undercoat, possibly locks the surface grain, too. I'd guess an off white or grey for Blue.... Just wondering....  ::)

Nice work, looking forward to hearin' this!

Great looking guitar!  I'm not a huge humbucker fan (single coils for me!), but I bet it'll sound great!

White - I didn't give it an undercoat...apparently the auto body paint doesn't "need" it...I'm almost wishing I'd gone with my gut and ignored that now....but it's too late now lol

The pics are a bit deceptive BD...the blue tarp makes it look more blue than it is lol
But it's definitely going to be unique  ;D
I'm not really a big humbucker fan either - P90s for me :D but I wanted to try the "Filtertron" type for something different...

I guess this should technically be a Cabronita rather than a Deluxe....
Kinda fitting to call it the Blue Bastard actually :P

So...how is this project coming along?  Done deal?  Finish looks nice in the pics.  Always a bit curious about Chinese kits.  Want to give one a go but can't justify the addition or expense, present circumstances aside.  But maybe.  Perhaps a PRS wanna-be style.  I replaced some cheap, stock vol/tone pots & jack for a guy fairly recently on a Chinese Ernie Ball Axis copy.  Great looker.  Body wood was supposed to be Basswood.  Looked a lot like Paulownia, which is a not too distant cousin to Balsa forChrissakes.   Maple cap was thin but neck was beautiful.  Raw but beautiful.

I'm a big P90 fan as well but singles, 90's or 'buckers it is all good.  All sound great given the pairing with the right amp or some judicious control manipulation or stomp box coloring.  Different tools for different jobs (see:  whatever sounds right).  Filter'Trons should be nice.

Nice to be able to roll up ones sleeves and get down & dirty with these things we use.

My compliments,

Gordon

Ok, so since I'm done the August ODC I guess I should take the time to do the final write up since I've been promising it for ages :P

For your viewing pleasure here's a dropbox link to the pics..... there's way too many to attach here :P

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8pib16f2huk0hkr/AAB5YGtYbU3tPF9ZIJcoNtTMa?dl=0

So....impressions?

It's a fairly easy build really....bolt on neck, so no glueing required.
Quality was pretty good, much better than expected, although you might want to replace the tuners if you got this (or a similar) kit. They just don't seem as good as any of my other guitars, although that could be my imagination lol I haven't experienced any tuning issues as such. It's more that when you tune it it seems to go from flat to sharp in a hurry without stopping on right in tune :P
I don't know if that makes any sense, but could it be a ratio thing??

The bigsby is pretty good...solid and looks cool as ****, but like most bigsby's of my aquaintance is better looking than it is practical :P
Luckily I got this model with the Bigsby for looks more than function :P

The neck feels chunky to me, compared with my other guitars, but that's got nothing to do with quality etc - some people will love it...some people with tiny hands like me will put up with it lol

I didn't use the stock Pups or electronics - the GFS set of Retrotrons are actually the Bees Knees, Cat's Pyjamas and Dogs bollocks actually lol
Note: I'm not a humbucker fan really - as you know P90s are my thing (once I discovered them), but these are pretty darned good - or at least they sound good to me on this guitar through the G5 pedal.... which is all that really matters :P

I had to modify the "trench" for the pots and selector slightly to get them to sit in right. The pots were fatter than those provided, but that's not a big deal :)

Regular listeners will have heard this guitar on the last few ODC songs and some of the covers I've done lately...but I'll attach some audio from this month's ODC to give you an idea of sound.....

In general I'd recommend this kit.... it's not going to be a Gibson Custom Shop model for that kind of money, but it's definitely playable and sounds pretty decent - maybe not up to Ag's standards of course :P :P but pretty decent all round.

The finish was pretty easy really...one thing to note though, do NOT follow the instructions as far as how far to go with the sanding...go waaaaay further than it tells you to :P
I think the instructions said to stop at 300 or 400 grit.... DON'T!!
Go up to 2000 at least....it'll be worth it :D

The body took the paint really well, you still need lots of light coats of course....
I used Autobody paint in an aerosol....nothing fancy, but it's effective :)
The only mistake I made was to use the wrong clear coat....
Actually, when I say mistake it actually turned out pretty cool :P
I used a clearcoat that turned somewhat yellow when applied, rather than a clear clear coat. Had I used the clear clear coat, the blue would have really stood out along with the slight metallic sparkle....

Having said that, the CC I used actually makes it look somewhat antiquey and weathered, which looks pretty cool :D
Lucky break I guess lol

The one thing that is wrong about the whole thing is, I think I installed the Bigsby a tiny touch off...there were no pre drilled holes for it....
As a result the high E string is a little out of place, so you have to watch how low you drop the Tunomatic Bridge because the string wants to "escape" the saddle. This means I find the action just a touch high for my liking....although with my playing you'd never notice :P I'm still a hacker no matter how low the action :P :P
Actually, I'm getting used to it the more I play it....so it's not a deal breaker by any stretch :)

All in all it was a worthwhile buy - got a nice looking, one of a kind guitar plus a whole lot of fun building it for under $150 Canadian....(plus paint, clearcoat, polish, sandpaper, pots, pups and anything else I bought lol)

Woulda probably been cheaper just buying a semi hollow Cabronita :P

Nah, with the prices Fender charge I could have made ten of these kits for less than one genuine article :P

The bottom line is ..... I like it, and I'd do it all over again given the choice....
In fact...I'm tempted right now :P

In case anyone is interested the site is diyguitarkits.net, based in Canada, and I believe they ship internationally. They seem to be cheaper than any of the other sites I looked at, but the selection and stock aren't great. Luckily they had exactly what I was looking for in the Thinline Tele Model with Bigsby and routed for humbuckers....
I'd really like to do an Explorer, but they don't carry it :P

To finish up here's some audio from this month's ODC (Just ignore the crappy playing lol) :

First up is the guitar through a Fender Combo amp sim (1965 Fender Twin Reverb) on the G5 pedal:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mf4z6a0crw1h1sa/Guitar%201%20FD%20Combo.mp3?dl=0

Second is the guitar through a Fender Vibro amp sim (1963 Fender Vibroverb):
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mz3eaw77rekjwpb/Guitar%201%20FD%20Vibro.mp3?dl=0

Last is the solo through a Fender Deluxe Reverb amp sim (1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb) with a touch of delay added after recording (cause I forgot to take it off when I rendered it lol) :
https://www.dropbox.com/s/whoodviq7hqie5d/Guitar%203%20FD%20Deluxe%20Reverb.mp3?dl=0

....and there you have it.....great fun was had by all :D
