I haven't used KAE for many years, but don't think I have ever used 16 tracks on any recording.  If it could do midi it would be great.

Studio One Free is ok, but being tied to the built in effects is more restrictive than only having 16 tracks.

I wish that Matthias would bring KAE back to life, it would not take that much, besides a Midi modual just fix it to use Reapers VST FX and it would be golden.

I find the 16 track limitation to be quite invigorating.... 8)

I've had a nasty cold that made me hoarse but today I felt much better and was able to sing!  Not well but I really enjoyed being able to practice at lunch. :)

I suggested to Matthias that he finally close the Kristal forum as it is still a haven for spam that I have to clean up each day. It looks lilke he did it...

PSA: Top quality DAW now FREE!
« on: April 12, 2018, 07:31:49 AM »
You may have seen on the interwebs recently about the death of Cakewalk, following Gibson's decision (due to their own financial issues) to shut Cakewalk and cease development.

Well, Cakewalk and its assets have been purchased by Bandlab, who have made the top tier SONAR Platinum available completely free (only minus some 3rd party plugins which had been bundled with the previous versions).  This is software which used to retail around $500.

All you need to do is register a free account at http://www.bandlab.com.  And then, the newly rebranded "Cakewalk by Bandlab" can be downloaded for free from https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk.

For anybody still using a free DAW like Kristal or Studio One Prime, I can't recommend this enough.

A couple of us mentioned this when it was first released, Kev, but a great find none the less....  ~:)

Bear in mind it is 64 bit only. Don't worry if your favourite 3rd party vsts don't work in 64 bit. The Sonar bundled stuff is top quality!

I've not come across a plugin which doesn't work in it, (SONAR at least, I've not tested the rebranded version yet) and that includes some old 32-bit plugins I have.

Was just something Dino mentioned in a previous thread.....
Personally, over the years, I have ended up just using the Sonar effects.

Yep, the bundled Sonitus plugins are great.  I'm also a big fan of their LP EQ's.  The main third party plugin I use are the Kjerhaus classic series (a superb freebie set), primarily their master limiter.

Sonar actually use some Kjerhaus plug-ins, albeit re-skinned.... Like the VC64, a favourite of mine in the master output.  ;)

Hi WS,,
I ended up pointing the Cakewalk Bandlab to my vst folders and it actually did pick up a few of the old ones afterall.  especially the Classic range which is all I really use anyway.

I got another email on the free offer this morning, it is a good deal.

And just a note on the 32bit VST thing.  If you have 32bit VST's that you really like, and they don't work on a 64bit system, you can always try this new bridging plugin that does seem to work well:
