It's a rainy day today in East Texas. Nice day to just relax and read a book. I took some time to build a small recording accessory, but mostly just chilling. Might take the wife out to dinner in a bit. If I play my cards right... ;D

Coffee would be great, Ag.  Too bad we're so far away.  Weather is suddenly getting lots better here, snow and ice and those 3ft banks should be melting down soon...

Still shoveling, Ag.  These last 3 weeks have been the worst of the winter, with a dozen other problems tossed in.  I could whine about it for hours...  :P

Midnight Oil
« on: April 01, 2017, 07:48:23 PM »
A bit random but I've really got into Diesel and Dust by Midnight Oil this week. I'd never heard t before but I love it. I had the Beds area burning single when it came out back in 87.

I really love Put Down That Weapon. I must have played it 30 times in about 5 days.

There's not a duff track on the album. Why did it take 3 years for me to hear it?

Anyone else got a take on this underestimated band? I'm expecting an Aussie or two to chip in

Great band OT, but after Peter Garrett's time as an MP and truly dreadful Minister For the Environment, a few of us could be excused for having gone off them.

For me the great feature of the band is Rob Hirst's drumming. He hits them harder than anyone I've seen

Way back in the day, our own Toadman supported The Oils on a couple of tours and I think his band were managed by Rob Hirst for a while.

Good news for you is that Midnight Oil are back playing live and touring.

Can't remember if it's on Diesel and Dust but one of my favorite songs is "Blue Sky Mine".

What? You mean THE Toadman?

That's nothing short of remarkable.

So Peter Garrett was never popular as MP or environmentalist? I guess that can be a turn off. Just need to look at Bono and she how he throws himself at any cause and makes the public put a little more distance between them selves and the band, to see that.

But Mr Garrett definitely has a distinctive voice. It kinda warbles a lot. I didn't realise that he tragetically lost his parents before he finished uni. Or that midnight oil started up in 1973!!!

And has he always been bald?

I'll look out for blue sky mine. Thanks Buster.

What I should have said about Peter Garrett is not that his heart wasn't in the right place as an MP and Minister, he was just extraordinarily incompetent. He was also there in some respects as a celebrity candidate and was therefore easily mislead by the professional political animals.

If you jump the train and head on up to the London Apollo you could probably ask him about it, if you can scam a ticket.

Not at £60 a pop. I've downloaded about 7 MO albums to Apple Music and getting well into it. Scream in Blue is such a bizarre but same time fascinating track. This band are very powerful but accomplished musicians.didnt realise they date pre-punk and starting in 1973 must be the oldest group still recording and touring? Or close to that.

But did they ever write a love song or anything other than anti-war, anti-America, anti-white men decimating aboriginal land, or anything non-political or non-environmental?

Nope. It's what they were best known for - the youth consciousness, and darlings of Triple-J.

What Buster said, although my take is that Garrett thought he'd make better in-roads into politics by being a part of the lesser of two evils in terms of the major Aussie political parties and got well and truly stymied and scuppered by a bunch of self-serving narcissistic power-hungry wankers. Usually I reserve such vitriol for conservatives but honestly, I can't tell one political leaning from the other these days... Garrett was out-played and made the perfect scapegoat...

Love is all you need...

some of their very early stuff was non political Al, "bus to bondi" "run by night" and later on, "baker man" was about the only time they relaxed the politics i think.
