The story so far..

Back around May, I had an opportunity to bring some technical drawings up to scratch. A good gig, working from home, but pretty crap when the client sends a bunch of documents requiring the attention of several workgroups. I got paid but the job is still open after all this time because whilst the crew are good at marking up changes, they're follow-up with checking is poor.

Rushing towards the end-of June, the same site wanted training on the system I was preparing the documentation in - no biggie, just get me the dates. Only thing is, they'd been "gunner" since January and as June closed, I suddenly found myself with two more job offers.

One was with the nickel refinery, a couple of months work as a maintenance adviser. Unfortunately, it meant working through a different consultancy, who didn't seem to interested in on-boarding me, dragging their rings.

At the same time, I was asked if I'd be interested in some work on an LNG project as a "controls specialist", basically pre-commissioning new plant. This job became available first and so I'm now on a two weeks on, two weeks off roster. Hence the random shout-box post recently, which I made from the island :)

Now, does that mean I'll be looking at recording stuff again? I don't know. I've been out of it for some time.
I have been playing with a incredible iOS app by Korg called Gadget (I've read it described as being like Reason before they added audio input recording) and that gives me the opportunity to just pick some instruments and noodle around with some ideas without sitting in from to a computer for hours on end. The down side is, having broken that "sit in front of PC" habit, I can't seem to create anything unless I'm on a 40 minute train journey - I can't even be bothered opening the iPad up on a two hour flight!

On the other hand, whilst up on site last week, I met a couple of guys who were practicing guitar, one who probably plays as good as/better than me and a guy in his 30s just picking up guitar.
These guys were just doing the "play chords and sing" routine, right up my alley, so I asked to join in with them and that kept me occupied before heading out on night-shift. When our swings line up again, I'll catch up with them but that may not be for a few weeks now.

Other than that, our grand-daughter is still as cute as ever, crawling about the place now, and every single time she hears music, she'll bounce one or both of her legs, more often than not in time.
Consequently, Pop's got her lined up to be a drummer, keyboard player, then guitarist - I reckon she'll nail them all well enough to be passable.
Strangely, no-one wants her to have a drum kit... we'll see about that...

My guitar work on a reasonable electric guitar actually sounded passable, mate. I was surprised. I've been that used to playing my dreadie for so long, trying to play it like an electric, I guess :)

Very cute... fun age.
Glad to hear you're still playing... I know sometimes these hobbies can be nice distractions from the craziness of life.
Got to always find your way back to it.

So anyway...
« Reply #127 on: July 30, 2016, 02:30:06 AM »
... I joined a Failbook group called Baldivis Musos about six months ago and there was a lot of not much happening.

I'd kind of made plans to catch up with one of the guys who has a small man-cave studio set up but ended up with a job instead.

Anyway, on Wednesday (about three months down the track), man-cave guy, Scott, creates a FB Messenger group, inviting me and a couple of other blokes into it.
Next thing I know, I'm reading that they're getting together on Friday night (last night).

So, with the boss's OK (having just got back that day), I went along. All three guys had played in bands before, so I was the newb among them but man it was the easiest jam session I've ever got into with more than one person :)

Funny thing is, the buzz of playing and getting in the same groove half the time, screwing up on others, got wrapped up in a layer of contentment.

Now that's the weirdest feeling I've ever encountered because I've not had anything supersede the sheer excitement of playing with others. I could get used to this... :)

Mate, it was the classic un-amped drum-kit, cranked up to 11 guitar and bass, and under-amped vocal mics all in a room with a floor space of about 16' x 12'...

Made me work hard to be heard, the buggers... but still a good night :)

Man, I really love that Epiphone SG!

With the coil-spilt switches, I can make it either jangly or grunty :)

Had another jam-session last night. Lost a lot of the consistency I used to have when I regularly played the open-mic nights but it's coming back. The other lads are sort of in the same boat but as I've mentioned, they've all done the band thing before, so I'm still "behind".

That said, we seem to be getting tighter - between the jam-sessions and the new guitar, I feel like my playing is improving. Still not to the extent that I'd consider myself a guitarist as such but I'm starting to leave a little more space in between strumming, experimenting a little with the coil-switches, and so on. Really good fun.

Here's the set list we start the night with although we don't necessarily play in this order:

Better Man - Pearl Jam
Day Tripper - The Beatles
Down By The River - Neil Young
Dumb Things - Paul Kelly
Learn To Fly - Foo Fighters
Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
No Secrets - The Angels
Rain - Dragon
Shiver - The Screaming Jets
The Zephyr Song - Red Hot Chili Peppers

I contributed two to that list, the rest I went along because I like them, whether I really know them or not.
In the spirit of the Mystery Challenge, I'll leave it to you guys to guess which ones... :)

Loving the SG more every time I pick it up to play.

Just installed Ableton Live Intro's 32-bit version so's I can squeeze more life out of Kore 2.

I'm rediscovering a lot of the things I bought with it and man it sound sso cool.

Just blown away an hour.

Started with a basic electronic drum kit to give me a sort of hip-hop vibe then messed around with the Deep Freq effects instead of looking for the compressor I meant to find...

Holy guacamole!

The things Deep Freq does to a drum beat! Turned it into a musical riff so I copied the MIDI file to a new track, copied just the Kore instrument over (not the FX) and there's my kit.. OK I messed with more kits before going back to the original one.

Then I thought I'd open Guitar Rig and grab an FX component (Reason style :) ), so stuck a compressor and graphic EQ on.

Then dropped another instance of Guitar Rig onto an audio track, set up a Marshall style amp and cab, added the Psychadelay box (whatever it's called), plugged the SG into the Zoom R8's HiZ channel, and just picked notes to ring out over the drum and melodic riffs... sweet sweet bliss...

Did I record it you ask?
Of course not... aside from still not being particularly good enough for others to listen to, selfishly, I was too busy having a good time :D

Yeeeeaaah... now I'm wondering what I can flog to get me either a Blackstar Core or Marshall Code in the 25W - 50W range.... (-!)

...  so anyway, I went with a Blackstar ID Core Stereo 100 ...

Been a bit of a gap, chaps.. sorry about that. Anyone with Failbook and who is connected has probably seen what's been happening here and there so some of this you may already know.

Between starting up and running an Aussie clan for the World of Warships MMO and weekly (mostly) jam sessions, I've had little time to do much in the way of recording.

The job I was doing at Barrow Island came to a close about 10 months ago and I was out of work again from then until the start of August when I went to start work with a local Instrument & Control Service & Sales mob. 12 minutes down the road, comes with a 4WD Toyota Prado, job title Business Development Manager & External Sales. Nowhere near what I've been earning, even with the pay cut, but the car makes it palatable.

Musically, Bandicoot Jam (my jam-buddies and I) did a free gig at a social club a few months back - you may have seen that already too, here - and we're due back there on Australia Day for two or three sets.

Bought myself the foot-switch that I'd been after for ages for the Blackstar (an FS-12 for those who may be interested..) from Thomann but with the minimum shipping at Au$75 for a unit weighing less than a kilo ("a couple of pounds" in Murican...) I ended up adding a hard-case and a little guitar stand and this didn't affect the shipping one iota.

Problem was, I had two pages open for the hard-cases, one for Strats and Teles, rather unhelpfully titled "ST & T Style bodies" whilst the SG case was listed as "Double-cut". Being late at night by the time I'd sussed out the extras I could add on, when it came to ordering, I ordered the wrong case... only I didn't realise until it got here!

Upside - I put it up for sale or swap on a local GAS For Sale Failbook group today and within 10 minutes I got someone interested in swapping. I'm now the proud owner of a hard-case which the SG fits into.. OK, so it's been about two or three months since it landed but I can't complain about the timing :)

Developments with the grand-daughter - Mum & Dad had been dragging ring in terms of literally getting their crap together so we now look after Kass from Thursday to Sunday and her Aunty looks after her Monday to Thursday. We just had an 11 day stint, mind you... My missus has been amazing but a two-year-old really saps it out of you when you're in your twenties, so now we're in our mid-50s it's been a bit of a struggle (more for the Boss than for me, I must say...).

Ummm.... I think that's about it other than maybe a few photos of one of the sales trips, some of the grand-daughter (awwww... :) ) , and possibly a video that didn't make Youtube yet...  ;D
