That's what I thought, Neil.  All about presentation.  ;)

I do wish they had some kind of protective screen or mesh over the speakers.  Can't wait to see how they sound...

.......as long as they look good  :P

Home again.  Didn't get the network/wi-fi finished at the school, have to go back again Thursday.

Sampson monitors are here, hopefully I can get them set up tomorrow and test them out on a mix I need to do.  They look good...

January 15, 2018, 09:34:48 PM
I can relate, Smurf.  Yesterday I made it 10-12 miles at 20mph before I turned around and came back.  Icy ruts pulling the car all over, and twice pulled me onto the center line with semi's coming the other way.  Scary...

January 15, 2018, 09:25:38 PM
Just had to turn around & come home from my sleep study tonight....super bad roads + ice + nothing but hills, valleys and drop-offs for 18 miles of the trip....no thanks! :P

January 15, 2018, 07:38:17 PM
Sampson monitors are supposed to be here UPS tomorrow sometime.  I have to go do a network job at a school, so I won't get to try them out till Wednesday.  But I have some mixing to do, so I'll let y'all know how they work...

January 15, 2018, 07:36:35 PM
Crazy snow storm today.  Going to have to plow, shovel, and scoop.  And probably again tomorrow...  >:(

January 13, 2018, 10:07:33 PM
I know, right?  I used to climb right in there.  Not anymore.

Two years ago I had to pull the exhaust manifold and some other things just to get to the back 3 plugs on one of the cars just to do a tuneup.

January 13, 2018, 10:04:41 PM
I hear ya Joom...our old 1/2 tons you could climb in beside the engine and almost close the hood,,, now you have to almost remove the motor to change a fan belt lol

January 13, 2018, 09:15:48 PM
I've got a pile of tools and testers that weren't even thought of 50 years ago.  Aside from basic drive train axle stuff, you have to start with an OBD tester just to know what might be going on.

I've always said I'd love to have a 1965 'anything' in good shape to fix up and drive...

January 13, 2018, 09:11:19 PM
Things have definitely changed a lot from back in the day of simple carburetors and distributors with points, Buster.  I could fix most things on the road with a few tools.  Not any more...

January 13, 2018, 08:16:27 PM
You guys are doing well. The 1st car I owned I took out the engine and gearbox, removed all the parts, had the engine o'hauled, put it all back in, re-timed it and drove it away. The new truck, I can't name a single thing under the hood.

January 13, 2018, 05:12:12 PM
And yeah, garage and pole barn, both full of motorcycles and dirt bikes, mowers, and a ton of other crap.  Been promising myself to clean them out for a long time and give myself a work area...

January 13, 2018, 05:10:25 PM
Same here, Red.  Back in the 70's before I got into computers I was a licensed mechanic, and I still refuse to pay somebody else to do what I can do.  Most of the time...

January 13, 2018, 04:36:32 PM
I'm with you Joom. I do all our car maintenance, have a 3 car garage and can't park a single car in it.  :/

Rock / My Annual Xmas Song - 2017 edition
« on: December 22, 2017, 02:32:42 AM »
Yes peoples...it's that time of year again!
The time when I delve deep into the seasonal music genre for something I can bear to listen to more than once in order to cover it and inflict my pain on unwary revellers :P

This one is a Darlene Love tune written by Phil Spector and friends from the 60s....

American Letterman fans will know it for sure...
Also covered by U2, Mariah Carey and Michael Buble (unfortunately lol)

Still, it's a great song anyway....

Challenges / October ODC - The Start
« on: October 07, 2017, 02:38:17 AM »
Well, well, well....

It's challenge time....

It's October....

It should be halloween themed right?

Nah..... :P

Too easy....

Been there, done, that, bought the digital download....

Don't blame me!
I tried to slough this off :P

Just kidding.... I'm terrible at this....
If I had any inspiration I wouldn't need the ODC to kick my ass into writing songs every month lol

Hmmm...now there's an idea.....

You always hear people say they have trouble starting something...whether it's a song, a letter, a lawnmower...

This month's challenge is to write and record a new song (starting ...now!) about the start of something.....
It can be anything - doesn't matter what - starting an engine, starting a new life, starting to change, starting a job - whatever you pick, the song MUST contain the word START (spoken or sung or whispered or screamed or shouted or mumbled) at least once.... and the song must be about starting....or not starting....something :D
And in keeping with recent events - the song should sound like something Tom Petty would record.....

No time limits,  no restrictions on instrumentation, no restrictions on loops/samples etc........
You may request a "guest" artiste on your track without stopping them from entering their own track...the only restriction is that they shouldn't be involved in the "writing" of the song - that would make it a collaboration and exclude them from entering their own track...
As always...a collaboration only has one entrant vote, the creator of other tracks has the only entrant vote (session musicians have no input)
Tactical voting by session artists will be punishable by red hot pokers and The Comfy Chair.....

Instrumentals welcome, but don't forget the "start" word stipulation...

Entries shall close midnight on the 28th of October 2017 wherever you are in the world..... so get started!

Rock / If You Remember This One......
« on: October 01, 2017, 10:37:19 PM »
.....you DEFINITELY weren't there lol

After @agradeleous posted the Sept ODC
I found myself listening to a lot of Jethro Tull and Hawkwind - probably as a sorbet to cleanse my ears after listening to Rush  :P

Ended up doing this one.....
It's a little bit rough, but then so were Hawkwind lol

The Epi Les Paul makes a showing here on the Rythym guitars, with the Wildkat taking the solo and some of the "weird" noises lol
Washburn bass through FA3 amp sim on "Lemmy" mode (bass turned off, mids on full, treble off, presence up).

Enjoy, or not......

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / JULY 2017 ODC - Train Song Voting thread
« on: August 26, 2017, 10:52:31 PM »
Let's get moving here, time's a wasting....

The mighty Gazebo set the challenge this(last) month as follows:

"This months challenge is to write and record a Train Song ie a song about a train, or a railway line or a rail journey."

So keeping that in mind, it's time for you all to get off your asses and vote...

You have till the calendar turns to 1st September 2017 wherever you are in the world...no excuses, no extensions, no bribes under $15.......

This means I will post the results on Friday night my time (which is 6 hours behind GMT for all you maths whizzes or Central Time for all you americans :P )

Entrants must vote their song last place, and in the spirit of transparency and fairness, since I'm an entrant and the tally person my vote is cast already as follows:

1. Cottonwood - Boxcar Boomer
2. Ags - Dreaming Train
3. Neilmac feat. PapaG - Eastbound Train

That's also a sly way of giving you the names and tracks for "cut and paste" purposes :P

As usual, PM me here if you're a member, use the guest voting thing in the menu on the far left if you're not a member. Alternatively, you can vote via private message on the TTM facebook page or email me direct at neilmac2006 at gmail dot com.....

Ok, here are the songs:

Ok, get voting!!!!!!

Rock / One for all you classic rockers......
« on: August 21, 2017, 03:27:53 AM »
How about a little Deep Purple then??

Love this tune.... in fact, when I went to the store to try out my first multi FX pedal MANY years ago, this was one of the tunes I tried out on it lol

Rhythm guitar is the Jay Turser Strat Copy through the Zoom G5 pedal on a Ritchie Blackmore Preset called SmokeWater ( consists of two treble boosters followed by a Vox Combo amp, followed by an Analogue Delay and a Hall Reverb). Sounds pretty damn good even if I say so myself....

Solo on the same guitar and Preset with the external Tube Booster engaged...

Organ is the Casio CTK3000 on some organ setting or other ( knew I should have written it down :P )
I also fed this signal through the G5 using a Marshall amp and, I believe, a Rotary speaker to a Jon Lord style Hammond Organ feel....

Drums are the MT Power Drumkit using a midi file from a GuitarPro tab by somebody or other :)

Vox and Bass as per usual ;)

Enjoy! Or not!

Battle of the Bands / BotB 2017 Results!
« on: August 12, 2017, 08:56:50 PM »
What a competition it's been.....
There's been drama, comedy, sadness and outright farce....
Little bit of slapstick and a generous helping of laziness.....

And that's just the vote counting  :P

In the end there can be only one winner, one loser and one who's only purpose is to separate the two  :P

It was a roller coaster ride, first one band would sneak out in front, then another, then another.
Each band held the lead at different points and it went right down to the wire in the end.

We had 13 member votes and 7 non members votes for a total of 20, pretty good turnout! Well done!

So the moment the world has been waiting for......
The opening of the golden envelope....
The announcing of this years winner....
......will take place after the commercials!
See you in a few!

.....and we're back!

To recap:

What a competition it's been.....

Wait? What?

We're running out of time?
Ok, then......

In third place, with a gargantuan 42 points are....

The Deplorables!!

In second, with a whopping 40 points are The 4 States!!!

And your winner with an unbelievable 38 points(had to count them twice), the new holder of the Squashed Timmies Cup trophy........are......

The Hats!!!!

Big round of applause for The Hats, please!!

Woot woot!
Cheating bleeps!

I guess not everyone in the audience agrees with the results, but too bad....somebody voted for them  :P

Thank you and goodnight!
Stay tuned for scenes from the next "General Hospital".....

Battle of the Bands / BOTB 2017 - Voting
« on: August 03, 2017, 04:55:13 PM »
The dust has settled, the waters have calmed, the fires have been put out and we're ready to determine which band called The 4 States gets to win bragging rights for the next year or so....  ~:)

We have three stunning entries this year, so it's going to be a tough call....

It is left up to you, the listener, to determine which song you like best....

We will be voting on an individual basis, no need for voting as a band or voting your band last or any of that stuff, just pick your favourite, second favourite and least favourite....simple, huh?

Place them in order, with 1 being your favourite, and send your votes via PM here, or email to neilmac2006 at gmail dot com

Voting will remain open until 11.59pm Central Time, 11th August 2017, (That's my time zone ;) Up to you to figure out what that means to you, but here's a clue : Central Time is 6 hours BEHIND GMT(Uk time) ). That way we can have results up on Saturday 12th August and The 4 States the winning band can commence celebrating....

That gives you 8 days or so from now to make your choices - that should be plenty of time for everybody, none of the songs are THAT long.....we're not The Grateful Dead, even if it does feel like it some days :P

Here is the playlist for your listening pleasure, and voting duty....

Happy listening!

Rock / New Song - Just Another Sunny Day
« on: May 24, 2017, 07:55:59 PM »
This was last month's (April) ODC entry....
Revamped somewhat and fiddled around with....
No fiddles were actually played on it so I couldn't post it in the Country section :P :P

Nevertheless, be warned...this tune kinda gets in your head and won't leave :P

Rock / I should Get A Haircut And Get A Real Job? Seriously??
« on: May 06, 2017, 11:34:07 PM »
Little bit of fun was had by me  :P

North Americans will recognise the George Thorogood cover.... Australians might recognise the original written by Dave Avery and Bill Birch of Antipodean climes....why do I get a funny feeling @Dino probably knows them?? Lol

Guitars are all the Wildkat through the Zoom G5, bass is the good old Washburn and the Zoom B1X...

Battle of the Bands / Battle of the Bands 2017
« on: May 05, 2017, 06:02:52 PM »
Is there any interest in doing this again this year?
Vote yes and leave your name in the comments....

If you don't know what the Battle of the Bands is then leave your name and credit card number in the comments section and we'll get right back to you  :P

What's that Joom?
I can't do that??
What do you mean I can't do that???
Oh ok then.... if you insist *sigh*

The TTM Battle of the Bands is a somewhat annual Challenge similar to the  Monthly ODC, but with much more in the way of bitching, whining, infighting and procrastinating...

A two month period will be allotted for writing recording and mixing a new song (say June/July). Names will be picked from a hat from the list of people signing up and placed in approximately equal teams(depending on number of participants), to form a band to create the aforementioned new song.....

No musical talent is required.....  :P
Just kidding...

The part you play in the band is between you and your bandmates...
Maybe you're busy, so all you can do is write lyrics or play a solo...you're in!
Maybe your forte is mixing....you're in!
Maybe you're best at wearing a cowboy hat.... you're in but we'll all make fun of you!

All you have to do is take part in some way, big or small....

Ideally we'd like to see enough participants to make THREE (count 'em - THREE) bands, so that's at least 12 people to be split into 3 groups of 4...
Shouldn't be difficult to get 12 people to sign up, there were 13 regular users logged in in the last 24 hours (as of 2pm Central Time).

We need volunteers from all areas of the creation process...you don't have to be expert in anything to join in, just willing to put up with a bunch of other TTMers for two months  :P

So if you're interested stick a yes vote in the poll above, and leave your name in the comments section...
You have until end of day May 31st 2017 to register your interest, draw will take place June 1st and Bands will be named and posted same day and you can start right away.

We'd aim to close entries end of day July 31st 2017, and open voting August 1st for a one week period, closing end of day August 8th, with results posted at some time on the 9th.

Requests for extensions will not be tolerated - you will have TWO MONTHS!

Voting will be on an individual basis, "entrant/band" votes will not be required. During the two week voting period it will be your responsibility to vote, there will be no extensions, although you may vote by proxy if you happen to be on holiday for two weeks in the Gobi desert where there is no cellphone service.
If you don't vote, you won't be counted :)

Challenges / December 2016 ODC - Voting Thread
« on: February 01, 2017, 01:24:34 PM »
Good day Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome to the voting thread for December January February January December ODC - Holiday Wish

 :P :P :P :P :P

After much confusion and controversy and collective head scratching the December ODC has closed.

Just like every other ODC we have every month  :P :P

It's not a real ODC unless there's some kind of confusion  :P

So without dragging it out any more, this was the criteria set by the mighty Cottonwood:

As its this time of year , I was thinking along the lines of a Holiday Challenge....this is such an original idea that its probably never been done before :P :P.

A Holiday Wish ...how nice that would be...for ourselves , for someone we love , for our City , for our Country....for the World...for something that`s close to our heart!!
I think we could all do with a Holiday Wish....

All genres and Instrumentals are welcome.

Standard ODC rules apply, only new songs .
Upload entries to SC as usual.

I know this is a very busy time of year for a lot of people , and we don`t get to spend as much time on our music as we`d like...so I was wondering if it wouldn`t be a good idea to extend the Challenge into January...say we made the finishing date the 20th of Jan...that would give us about six weeks which I think would make a big difference...then, five or six days for the voting,  and that would leave us a few days extra to make up for February being a short month...this is just a suggestion at this point ,mind ,I`d like to hear what everyone else thinks...if folk don`t agree or feel its too long just let me know...nothing `s written in stone....but if we agree I`ll come back put the closing date in :) :)...

So...the closing date is Midnight wherever you are on the 31st  of January...
Good luck all :)

That being the whole of the thing.... we have three entrants as follows:

RedJoker - The Day After Christmas
Onetrack - Don't Stop Believing In Santa
Gazebo - I Wish I Could See You Fly

And the Playlist is here:

Vote according to the criteria and your conscience.....

For our American friends....there will be no backsies if you don't agree with the result  :P :P :P
Although Ags would look quite fetching in one of those pink hats  ::)

Entrants must vote  and they must put their song in last place, as always....

Send me your votes either via PM here, or at neilmac2006 at gmail dot com (you know how to do that, don't claim you don't lol )

Closing for voting shall be 12.01 AM February 4th, so we can get the results up Saturday morning and get ourselves back on schedule...don't forget, February is a SHORT month  :P

No excuses! You only have 3 songs to pick between.....

Chocks away!!
Get 'er done!!
C'mon you Reds!!
