All the KAE folks are over here now agr, but I WOULD be curious as to how many still use KAE as their DAW? I pull it out for a challenge every now and then, and still find it totally useable.... 8)

Battle of the Bands / BOTB 2018 - Bands and Details
« on: June 06, 2018, 01:57:00 AM »
As promised, late I know, the draw has been made!

No doubt you’re all itching to know who your band mates will be.....

But first, a little housekeeping.....

It was decided to go with four bands of three members each......
This way, if there are any latecomers they can be inserted into the bands in numerical order....firstly though, if there is a dropout any late volunteers will automatically take over the missing member’s spot. If there are no back outs, the next volunteer will join Band 1, second volunteer will join Band 2 and so on......got that? Good.

Anyone else who missed the original post.....now is your chance to sign up!
Don’t be shy....everyone is welcome!!

The bands were drawn blindly from a plant pot by my lovely assistant, She Who Must Be Obeyed ( ‘er indoors for short ).

Here are the bands:

Band 1:   @RedJoker - @Joom  - @neilmac

Band 2:   @way2lon  - @Cottonwood  - @Smurf

Band 3:   @whitestrat73  - @papaG  - @onetrack

Band 4:   @Dino - @rkennett  - @BoneDigger

The challenge is to write and record a brand new song, to the best of your ability, and post it to the BOTB SoundCloud account (login details when I remember what they are from last year  :P ) before midnight on the 31st July 2018.

We had two theme suggestions, so you are free to choose from either ( or both if you’re feeling ambitious   :P ).

The themes were “Lost Forever” and “Anger Management”.......

Any style, any length, any method is completely acceptable

Practice is encouraged but not mandatory - unless you were drawn in the same band as PG, in which case different rules apply....  :P

Have at ‘er boys and girls!

Guitars / The Blue Deluxe
« on: May 23, 2018, 11:58:06 PM »
Finally bit the bullet, boys and girls.....the build starts here  ;D

Found me a template for the headstock, ‘72 Tele deluxe version....
The headstock, although left squarish and chunky for cutting down, wasn’t quite a match for the template - but it was darned close. Nothing a nice sanding job won’t make better. Besides, it’s the proportions that make it pretty.... the shape is there to be found  :)

Fairly easy to cut, didn’t do any damage to the “kept” side....fairly pleased so far lol

Next up - sand it into shape....

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / April 2018 ODC - The Results!
« on: May 03, 2018, 10:08:06 PM »
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls.....
Welcome to the April 2018 results!

I have to say that of all the times I’ve done the tally this has to be the strangest set of voting I’ve ever seen lol

Usually a couple of songs clump together here and there across the board and the voting is fairly consistent, the same songs tend to get the same placing from everyone within a spot or so. But not this time lol

Every song had a couple of first places for example, and the placements were all over the place....... everyone placed in each spot at least a couple of times  :)

I think that speaks to the universal quality of this months entries.
Every song could have won....it was that tight from first to last  :)

That being said, there was a clear winner until the last vote was counted which messed everything up  :P

So, in reverse order, here are the results:

In fifth spot is Onetrack with Changing Seasons!

In fourth, with the song The Cars Undone is Smurf!!

In third place and winning the coveted bronze medal is Way2lon with Beast From The East!!! (I’m still not sure if he’s talking about the weather or PG - he’s so Far East of here, he’s almost west)

And now, in a dead heat, photo finish, tie for first place.....

The winners of the April 2018 ODC are.......

BoneDigger and RedJoker!!!!!

I call for a dance off to determine the overall winner.....!!!

Video evidence must be provided!

Gents, the floor is yours......

Battle of the Bands / Sign Up Sheet - BOTB 2018
« on: May 01, 2018, 12:09:40 AM »
Yes boys and girls.....it is that time again!

Our annual Battle of the Bands should commence June 1st through the end of July as per previous years  ;D

So if you’re ready and willing, sign up below!

It doesn’t matter what you bring to the table, just your active participation is required even if it’s just to say “Yeah, That sounds alright”  :P

As per last year, a random draw will take place close to the end of May to determine band members....

As an added bonus - theme suggestions will also be accepted up to that point and if there are enough suggestions, possibly a random draw to determine the theme  8)

So roll up, roll up......getcha name in!

Hello boys and girls!

Are you sitting comfortably?
Then we'll begin....

PapaG is his finite wisdom set the following challenge:

"The theme for this month's challenge is "Spring Break". This can mean one of three things to you.

1. Bikinis and beaches and beer.... 8) Fort Lauderdale anyone?

2. Winter is finally leaving and we're tired of minus friggin' cold....  :o

3. The suspension on your old jalopy that you are too cheap to fix has finally given up and nearly ended your life due to your obvious lack of attention to maintenance.... ::)

Starting now, write a story song about "SPRING BREAK", in any style or genre. Your "lead vocal" must be spoken, not sung though it may include singing parts. Song length must be at least 3 - 4 minutes. Any means to create the music allowed, (fart in a jar, Karministicalize your vacuum cleaner, make your wife angry and record the response...) "

Got that?
Let's continue....

As per usual your mission is to listen and rate the entrants on adherence to criteria, quality of song, quality of excecution etc etc etc
Then you send me your vote via PM, email (neilmac2006 at gmail dot com) or the guest voting button on the left hand sidebar....

Rank your choices from #1 (the best) to #5 (least favourite), unless you're an entrant in which case you MUST vote your song in the #5 slot.

Here, for your cut and paste pleasure, are the entrants:

The Cars Undone - Smurf
Beast From The East - Way2lon
Changing Seasons - Onetrack
The Captain Finds Peace - BoneDigger
Spring Break Blues - RedJoker

And now here, for your listening pleasure, are the songs:

*In case you missed it: Smurf's song is now in the ODC playlist. You're welcome.*

Voting will close 11.59pm Wednesday May 2nd 2018 wherever you are, with results to be posted morning of May 3rd my time :D
Or whenever I can be bothered....

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / March 2018 ODC- The Results
« on: April 02, 2018, 12:14:22 AM »
Good evening and here is the news....

The March 2018 ODC has finished, the electorate have been called to the polls and now it is time for the results....

Early indications were that voter turnout was brisk and voting was completed at an unprecedented speed....

The counting however, was marred by accusations of bribery and corruption and cheques not clearing missing ballot boxes....

After a judicial inquiry it was discovered that voting and counting proceeded as per normal....

A special mention must be made to the candidates who lost their deposit - namely Rk, Cottonwood, Bonedigger and Onetrack. The slimmest of margins kept them out of the final four, however no refunds will be given.

The top four candidates were returned in reverse order.....

In 4th place, defeating the incumbent by the narrowest of margins (a half bottle and a fish supper), was Way2lon!

In 3rd place, after revelations in the tabloids about his use of outside mechanics, was Joom!

Slipping into 2nd on the back of voter support with his "free vsts for all" stance was Smurf!

And in first, defeating the previous incumbent by a landslide, riding high on his "Cowboy till I can't be bothered anymore" slogan, ably assisted by his much handsomer running mate(and the real reason they won).... I give you, ladies and gentlemen, the one, the only (except there's two of them).....

Gentlemen, the floor is yours.......

Apologies boys and girls....
Yesterday was a little hectic....but here we go :D

The Challenge this month was set by BoneDigger after his first win in the February ODC.

The challenge was to create a jingle for one of the three following products:

Item 1: A new perfume/cologne for men or women (androgynous). This cologne/perfume will be called "Northern Lights" and it has a rather seductive scent.

Item 2: A new minty candy made with sugar and Bourbon.  This will be called "Southern Comforts"

Item 3: A new sports car made by Chevrolet.  This car has the largest and most powerful motor ever put in a car.  We'll call this car the "Millennium"

The only real criteria was that it should only be a minute-ish long :)
Easy, right?

So easy that eight of you jumped on the bandwagon....
(Why do I get the feeling that getting eight entrants to vote on time will be like herding cats? lol Past experience, maybe? lol)

Here are your entries, conveniently packaged in a pretty little playlist:

Members can PM their vote to me here, alternatively email them to neilmac2006@gmail.com

You have until11.59pm March 31st, wherever you are in the world, to get your votes in, results will be posted April 1st  ~:)

Place your songs in order of preference, 1st to 8th, entrants must vote their entry in last place (8th).

For your convenience, copy and paste the following:

Onetrack - Northern Lights
G-Bob - Northern Lights
Cottonwood - You're Not Alone With Northern Lights
Smurf - Northern Lights
Joom - Millennium Jingle
RK - Southern Comforts Jingle
Bonedigger - Southern Comforts Jingle
Way2lon - A New Car Is On The Street

Good luck everyone!
Get listening!
Get Voting!
Don't let the green grass fool ya!
Don't let me down!

Open DAW Challenge (the ODC) / Jan 2018 ODC Results!!!
« on: February 07, 2018, 11:11:32 PM »
Alright alright alright.....

Hear ye, hear ye......

It’s results time!

Are you ready?

Then let’s begin.....

Coming in a very tight fifth is the Former Young Fellow known as Onetrack!

Just barely pipping OT to the post was our very own published recording Artiste ( note the “e” - that makes it posh)...., RedJoker!!!!

And as tight as those two were, our next two entries were so close there was nothing between them at all.....in a tie for 2nd place we have the original Blue Man Group (ya shoulda sued them) Smurf, and that nefarious band of country styled rascals PG/W2/CW, otherwise known as PapaG, Cottonwood and  Way2lon!!!!

That leaves only one winner....

I give you the one, the only, the Man himself......

Congrats to all - all top notch tunes again!

Over to you Gaz.......

Guitars / Project (New Gear Day)
« on: January 22, 2018, 11:10:13 PM »
A little belated Christmas present came my way this week ;D

It’s a build your own guitar kit  :P

I opted for a Thinline Tele model c/w Bigsby style trem (more for looks than using to be honest lol).
Comes routed for humbuckers (included in the kit), but I’m going to try a pair of Guitar Fetish Retrotrons (Filtertron clones)  ;D

Looks pretty nice out of the box - solid feel, top is capped I see, supposed to be basswood body maple neck and rosewood fingerboard - is it? Buggered if I know lol
All I know is it’s made of wood  :P
Definitely not particle board anyway lol  :P

Neck sits nicely in the socket, each piece is “numbered” - whether it’s actually matching or they just wrote the same number on both is unprovable lol

If you want, here’s the link http://diyguitarkits.net/tele%20thin%20II.html
Actual pics below

Leaning towards a light metallic blue for finish, similar to the Pelham Blue ES339 @gc fixed up a while back.....not fully committed yet though  :D

Think this will be fun  ;D

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

Yep, been and gone and done it :P

My "debut" album is out for sale lol

Went with CDBaby Pro for distribution, so we'll see how it goes....
Hopefully have some useful info for anyone else thinking of doing the same thing....

Special thanks to @papaG for much help listening, suggesting, critiqueing etc...and to you all for endless encouragement, tips and tricks etc
Couldn't have done it without you guys!

So far it's hit Amazon in the states and the UK, not made it to Canada or Australia yet for some reason, should be hitting iTunes any day too :)
It's also up on Spotify and a few other streaming venues for those that like that kind of thing....

All in all, it's pretty weird seeing YOUR product for sale on Amazon lol
Makes it kinda real....

Rock / My Annual Xmas Song - 2017 edition
« on: December 22, 2017, 02:32:42 AM »
Yes peoples...it's that time of year again!
The time when I delve deep into the seasonal music genre for something I can bear to listen to more than once in order to cover it and inflict my pain on unwary revellers :P

This one is a Darlene Love tune written by Phil Spector and friends from the 60s....

American Letterman fans will know it for sure...
Also covered by U2, Mariah Carey and Michael Buble (unfortunately lol)

Still, it's a great song anyway....

Challenges / October ODC - The Start
« on: October 07, 2017, 02:38:17 AM »
Well, well, well....

It's challenge time....

It's October....

It should be halloween themed right?

Nah..... :P

Too easy....

Been there, done, that, bought the digital download....

Don't blame me!
I tried to slough this off :P

Just kidding.... I'm terrible at this....
If I had any inspiration I wouldn't need the ODC to kick my ass into writing songs every month lol

Hmmm...now there's an idea.....

You always hear people say they have trouble starting something...whether it's a song, a letter, a lawnmower...

This month's challenge is to write and record a new song (starting ...now!) about the start of something.....
It can be anything - doesn't matter what - starting an engine, starting a new life, starting to change, starting a job - whatever you pick, the song MUST contain the word START (spoken or sung or whispered or screamed or shouted or mumbled) at least once.... and the song must be about starting....or not starting....something :D
And in keeping with recent events - the song should sound like something Tom Petty would record.....

No time limits,  no restrictions on instrumentation, no restrictions on loops/samples etc........
You may request a "guest" artiste on your track without stopping them from entering their own track...the only restriction is that they shouldn't be involved in the "writing" of the song - that would make it a collaboration and exclude them from entering their own track...
As always...a collaboration only has one entrant vote, the creator of other tracks has the only entrant vote (session musicians have no input)
Tactical voting by session artists will be punishable by red hot pokers and The Comfy Chair.....

Instrumentals welcome, but don't forget the "start" word stipulation...

Entries shall close midnight on the 28th of October 2017 wherever you are in the world..... so get started!
