Lyrics:

The Cafe

There's a little place downtown, called The Cafe,
It's the hottest place on the music scene.
And it's the place to be heard and be seen,
Or you can sit and read a book or a magazine.

The music's always on in The Cafe,
And the people are always ready for a chat.
The radio is playing softly in the background,
And the coffee's always on, how about that?

So c'mon downtown to The Cafe,
It's the place where everyone wants to be.
So c'mon downtown to The Cafe,
And the best cup of coffee you'll ever see.

We got people from all over in The Cafe,
And any kind of music you could want.
Folk and Rock'n'Roll and even some Country,
Soul and Funk, in fact we got the lot.

There's lakefront loons singing country tunes in The Cafe,
City slicker, finger pickers in there two.
We got 'em all, big and small in The Cafe,
And if you want you could be one of them too.

So c'mon downtown to The Cafe,
It's the place where everyone wants to be.
So c'mon downtown to The Cafe,
And the best cup of coffee you'll ever see.

So c'mon downtown to The Cafe,
It's the place where everyone wants to be.
So c'mon downtown to The Cafe,
And the best cup of coffee you'll ever see.

This started life as my July SMC Challenge entry :)

Could probably do with some tidying up....but I kinda like it the way it is...

Challenges / gmhCafe - SMC August 2013 Challenge
« on: August 05, 2013, 01:01:33 AM »
Hello everyone!!

Finally Glenn fell out of his canoe ;)

I still suspect deliberate sabotage....

Ags??
Just where were you on the night of the 15th??
Can you prove it???
 :P
So anyway....

It's been left to me to set this month's challenge :)

The challenge this month will be to write a song about your love for your favourite pet (or an animal of your choice :) if you don't have or have had a pet).

Songs should be MAX 4:30 in length. No old, pre written, off the shelf songs.. it must be a new original piece. The song can be any genre or style :) Collaborations are allowed, but there'll be only one vote per entry. Loops and samples can be used at your discretion :)  Instrumentals are allowed, but you must clearly convey what pet or animal is - be it through the spoken word or use of sound effect (No leaving it up to the imagination :P  you must be clear! )

Challenge deadline is August 28th/13 at midnight where ever you are on the globe, with voting starting on the 29th.

Tally man to determine final voting close but I suggest Sat 31st Aug with results Sunday morning :)

Here's the complete SMC INFO topic: everything you need to know about the SMC but were afraid to ask!

Come on everyone!
Lets get more than two entries this month!!

Works in Progress / Made of Stone - room for improvement?
« on: June 05, 2013, 03:27:58 PM »
Yes people...here I am again with my monthly installment of "What was wrong with this one?" :P

As usual looking for feedback with a view to improving my art ;)

This time I think I'm going to ask anyone who's interested enough to participate to break down their feedback for me....

I'd like to get more into specific areas rather than the song as a whole...
I know it's sounding better than when I first arrived here, but I also know it can get much, much better yet....

If you could please comment on the following areas:

The Song: By this I'm talking about the song itself rather than anything to do with the technical stuff - structure, lyrics, melody etc

The Performance: Instrumentation, tuning, timing issues, sounds

The Mix: All the techy stuff - what am i doing right? - what am I doing wrong?

As always, your participation is greatly appreciated :)

And if anyone fancies some mixing practice, raw tracks are available upon request ;)

Challenges / MARCH 2013 VOTING - Update
« on: March 30, 2013, 06:40:38 PM »
As set by Whitestrat:

This months challenge is to write and record a lullaby to help a child to sleep while there is a storm raging outside.

No sound effects, i.e. rain sounds, thunder sounds are to be used other than those made using western musical  instruments. Of course, instrument samples are allowed but not sound effects. So, you may mess with the instrument sounds, if you wish, to achieve an effect.

A minimum of 6 different* chords are to be used (just for the hell of it, LOL).

Maximum of 4 minutes duration.

A minimum of 10 spoken words must be included.

Finally, for Ags peace of mind  , when you upload your song, you must categorise how you have complied with the above conditions, including the 6 chords! You must also post the lyrics indicating the spoken words.

The words hamster, half bottle of scotch and ukelele must not be used.....LOL.

All normal challenge 'implied' conditions apply.

And there you have it....

Now it's VOTING TIME people!!!

The standard voting rules apply:
Vote yourself last (8th).
All entries must vote or face my wrath!!

1. Nine Little Words - Way2lon
2. Your Own Lullaby - Bri
3. Fairytales - Whitestrat
4. Angel Lullaby - PapaG and his Angels
5. Lullaby - Onetrack
6. When You Were Young - Dino
7. Lullaby - Ags and Son
8. Lullaby Bye - Toadman

Votes by PM or email to neilmac2006atgmail.com

Completed Originals / Lowdown Bandroom Blues
« on: March 26, 2013, 08:45:04 AM »
Here's a new one for you....

This started out as a thought for the January challenge. It wasn't working for me with the challenge restrictions so I set it aside and Way2lon and I went in another direction. Once the challenge was done I revisited it and this is what came out.

Great vocal and harmonica from Way2lon, the rest is me.

Lowdown Bandroom Blues.

Well the clock keeps ticking, ticking and a tocking,
The band keeps playing, reeling and a rocking.
They'll play all night if you give them a chance,
Music with a beat to get you to dance,
Sad songs about love to move you to tears,
Songs from your youth that roll back the years.

The drummer's got the beat, steady as a rock,
If he missed a beat it would come as such a shock.
Bassist on the left, locked into the groove,
The two of them together, they make your body move.
Guitarist on the right, wants to be like Chuck,
Practices in the mirror

Instruments / NGD - Happy Xmas to me Part II
« on: January 13, 2013, 01:12:58 AM »
Well I went and did it.....got my hands on a Telecaster.....jeez I wish I'd done that YEARS ago lol

Never really had an interest in Tele's.....always liked the Strat more...but I think I might be a convert lol

So I attached a little soundtrial right out of the box...just for fun....

Starts with an "American Clean" sound on the zoom 505II pedal...bridge pickup, neck and bridge then neck alone....

Then onto "Blue Note" patch for some crunch, pickups in the same order....

No fiddling with the tracks...straight "as recorded" sound....no eq or filters or any of that nonsense...

Excuse the playing etc :P I just wanted to hear it back on tape :)

And just for fun lets have a competition...I wonder if anyone can make a guess at brand or value....

Bear in mind....it IS being played by a hacker :P

Works in Progress / Drive! Feedback please.......
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:46:39 PM »
This song was entered in the ODC October...

Since then I've been doing some reading, learning and generally messing around with it....

During the voting process it didn't garner many comments at all...and let's face it...we don't learn anything that way....
Sooooooo.....

I'd appreciate some feedback of any description....hopefully I can learn something more :)

Have at 'er gents.....

Completed Covers / A little something I've been messing around with.....
« on: October 10, 2012, 01:21:54 PM »
So here's a little something....
Did this one utilizing some tips and tricks learnt over the last couple of weeks I've been around here ( Thanks guys!!)
Still figuring it all out..but I think there's been some improvement :)

Hopefully when I get my paws on my new gear next week sometime, it'll sound better....

But in the meantime....

Hardware / A little input required....
« on: October 05, 2012, 10:02:51 AM »
.....no pun intended lol

The time has come, the walrus said........lol

I've finally come to the conclusion that I need to part with some hard earned and buy a decent microphone....the $10 one just isn't cutting it (especially when I hear the quality you guys are recording...thanks a lot :P :P )

I've been thinking about it for a few years now, but since what I was doing wasn't really for public consumption it wasn't a big deal and I never got around to it..

So I'm looking at the Shure SM58 which seems to be one of the more recommended and commonly mentioned mics....

My real problem is deciding between going with the USB connection or buying a little mixer (that way I'm not constantly plugging and unplugging my guitars, pedals and the mic all the time - as I get older I can't be bothered, too much like work for my liking lmao)

This is the mixer I've been eyeing up....

http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/502.aspx

the alternative is going with the USB adapter for the SM58

http://www.shure.com/americas/products/accessories/microphones/microphone-problem-solvers/x2u-xlr-to-usb-signal-adapter

Any of you Techie Boffins have any suggestions/comments/criticisms/experience with any of these?

I don't want to spend a whole pile of cash for what is basically a hobby....but I also don't want to buy something that's not suitable anyway... :)

All help appreciated....

 New here...be gentle lol

Did this a while ago......
I've been fooling around with Kristal for 3 or 4 years now....but I don't think I have the "ear" for mixing unfortunately....

Looking for honest criticism....don't have anyone to give unbiased opinions at home lol.....I'd like to hear what your thoughts are....

Thanks in advance....:)
