Completed Originals / Falling through
« on: June 05, 2012, 04:20:20 AM »
Hi all,
Hope you are all well, what have I been missing??
Not been around in a while as I decided to really learn how to use my DAW, which became very intensive >:(
I really didnt understand about miking, eq, compression, levels, clipping, mixing, mastering and even singing......the list goes on!!!
Anyway, I'm back now, after putting the whole process together, to produce this track, which I think proves that my efforts havebeen worthwhile!!
Its just 3 acoustic guitar tracks, 1 slide, 1 VST bass, 1 VST strings, and 3 vocals, all recorded through my

Completed Originals / New year
« on: January 01, 2012, 08:17:05 AM »
Hi all,

For the first time in a long time, I have been playing my Epiphone guitar. This instrument started life as a biscuit resonator and, because I didn't like the sound, I converted it to a spider, changing the cone and all the inside bits.
I haven't picked it up in a long long time but I heard a piece of music that I liked and decided to have a noodle this morning. The tune New Year is what has come out, there are 4 tracks, 1 finger picking and 3 slide, all in an open tuning, and all have had the bass end rolled of in EQ and have a little reverb.
The track is here: http://soundcloud.com/jimburridge/new-year and, for a few hours of "inspiration" I am quite pleased with how its turned out!!

Happy new year people!!

CuBase / Which DAW
« on: November 19, 2011, 03:10:02 AM »
Hi people,
I have been developing my recording skills with Cubase 6 and, although the only other DAWs I have used are Mixcraft and Audacity, I am coninually knocked out by the C6 product.
The track below is something I put together over 2 evenings and it has 7 tracks. I am now able to use the multi timbral Halion Sonic SE ( a cut down version of Halion Sonic that is with C6 ) to create interesting instrument mixes of traditional and synth style instruments on one track. I have also discovered the transpose function and this is the first time I have used it!!
Anyway, 1 guitar track (real), 1 drum, 1 bass, 1 strings, 1 sax and 2 multi instrument tracks make up this song, and I think this is still just the tip of the iceberg as far as the C6 potential for "dipsticks" like me are concerned!!

Works in Progress / Friday night inspiration
« on: October 29, 2011, 03:32:57 PM »
Hi all,

I have been away to Cyprus for a much needed break in the sun. Lots of swimming, food alcohol and re-charging of batteries!! While there I continually wished I had a guitar to play with 'cos I felt I would have benn able to put some nice laid back stuff together!
Anyway, when I get back I read the post about the downturn in creative juices and I must put myself in that position! I haven't much free time with the new job and everything and thats important when creating musical stuff!
So I was watching a TV programe called "Songwriters at the BBC" on a Friday night and I was affected by 3 consecutive songs! The first was Close your eyes by James Taylor, the second was May you never by John Martyn and the last was by Carole King. I dont know what pushed my buttons but I immediately went for my acoustic guitar and thought that the songs would make a nice little CD for people of a "certain age"!
Some of you will know that I had already posted my version of Close your eyes so the next target was this track. As yet there is no vocals but that will be fixed hopefully tomorrow!
Anyway, here's the next song in the trio!!

http://www.ttmbandroom.com/index.php?t=audio_player&song_id=1520

Of to work on the John Martyn song now! Its great to have an objective!!!!

Completed Originals / Close your eyes
« on: September 17, 2011, 02:34:10 PM »
Hi Guys & Gals,

After all this time struggling with my feeble attempts at singing I think I have come up with an answer!!
Up to now I was doing all my recording in a conservatory which was next to the sitting area where my wife stays most of the time!!
Anyway, acoustically it was bad but, more importanly, I was afraid to let people hear my feeble attempts at singing, so I was always reigning it in and getting rubbish results!
I read a comment here about building a mancave and I thought "Icould do that now the kids have left ( almost )" so today I set up home in a spare bedroom. I am able to sing louder and not worried about who can hear me....magic!!
This James Taylor song is something I have been working on, learing how to play, and this is my first attempt at putting a real vocal on!

Hope you like it and I'm now off to the mancave for more of the same!!

Completed Originals / Marleys Store
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:02:21 PM »
Hi all,

I have now, officially, completed JOOMs song Marleys Store!

It has taken me over a week to ix it to where I think I do the lyrics justice and a big round of applause for the pen manship of Mr JOOM.

FYI, drums, bass, organ, horns and strings are Halion one VST in Cubase 6. Lead, rythym and slide guitar is through Phonic mixing desk, vocals are augmented with C6 EQ and reverb.

Hope you like it!!

Thanks JOOM, here's to the next one!!

This is a new bit of work, started yesterday and finished this morning.
There is more than a "nod" to early Eagles plus a little feel of the Shadows guitar work.
All I've got to do now is put some lyrics to it.............................!!

Works in Progress / Guitar Trial
« on: August 05, 2011, 04:30:52 PM »
Hi all,
As you will know, I have been working at a new job and haven't been doing much music lately, but I heard a new song by Joss Stone, liked the riff, and thought "I'll have a little dabble"!
Anyway thats not the reason for this message, its more to do with the Cubase 6 programe I am now running.
As most of you will know, when doing all the music yourself there normally develops a "timing" issue. This is usually a mixture of latency, impatience, and ( in my case) a bad sense of timing! I have discovered a brilliant piece of Cubase 6 that allows you to really tighten up all the instruments ( both midi and conventional guitar ) so the whole sound is tighter.
I have been playing with this little track for about 5 days ( well nights actually ) and I think I have cracked the process. This particular piece was all over the place, timing wise, but its now ( I think ) really tight!!
Any way, the point is if any of you would like me to have a go with one of your songs I would be more than happy to try!!
Heres the song:

Let me know if I can be of service to any of you!

It doesnt have same impact as San Francisco or Paris but I've put together another little ditty called Streets of Aylesbury.
I am basically playing around with my new Cubase 6 testing what it can and cant do. So far I am impressed!!

It is a very guitar heavy sound but I quite like it and if any body wants a stab at some lyrics let me know and I will send over the file

Hi TTM'ers.
I have been busy extricating myself from the financial hole unemployment leaves, hence I haven't had the time to hang out here......sorry people but life (unfortunately)comes before dreams!!
Anyway there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are getting back into a good position.....so much so that I awaiting delivery of the new Cubase 6 programe!
Anyway, I have been feeding my wife with snacks and wine while she soaks up the wedding on TV, and I decided to put together a "slushy" peice which has taken about 5 hours on the old C5 programe.
The good news is that there are no vocals or lyrics so if anyone wants a go feel free!!!

I will catch up very soon TTM'ers, have I missed much???

Hi guys,
I dont have a lot of time for music stuff at the moment but I have just got a 30 day free trail on Cubase 6 and, I have to say, it is absolutely briliant!!
The whole thing is much sweeter than its predecessors and the VST's and effects are unbeleivably good!
Even the effects for guitars are superb! I put together this track over 2 evenings (4-5 hours) and I really like the guitar sounds, particularly the wahwah!
Have a listen:

Anyway I was at my Mums 85th birtday bash last weekend and when I got home I started tinkering and this is what has appeared. No lyrics if anyone is interested???
And does anyone know how to fit an "under saddle" pick up to an acoustic guitar as I have just bought one but I am a bit wary of ruining my 28 year old Washburn D20??

I promise I will catch up with everything as I get back to using TTM until then thanks guys and heres the track:

Sorry I haven't been around for a while but I have been busy trying to get a job! No luck so far but, in a moment of self pity, I started a song 2 days ago and finished it today. When it was done I realised how personal it was so, to any of you that listen to it, it is a real good snap shot of where my head is at the moment!!!! Anyway here it is:

Completed Originals / Happy days
« on: October 27, 2010, 02:46:46 PM »
Hi all,

http://www.ttmbandroom.com/index.php?t=audio_player&song_id=1153

Having sold one of my guitars, and putting the others up for sale, it got me thinking about trying to get full use of the Midi and Cubase programe. So having time on my hands I closed all the doors and windows, put on my thinking head, and began mucking about a week ago.
I discovered its the little things like reading the manual - then attempting different parts through trial and error. I also discovered that Youtube is a goldmine of instructional information and easier to understand 'cos it is demonstrated "before your very eyes"!!!!

The result is the above track called Happy days and is a "coming together" of a lot of the midi insert bits on Cubase. It is all midi VST'i - not a guitar anywhere near it!!!

I actually enjoyed it more than working with guitars, mainly 'cos the midi stayed in tune no matter what I did to it!

A new musical path for Jimbo????

Ok, so I have a weekend without the wife and I figure "I can do some nice music without the constant nagging to be doing something useful like mow the lawn, go shopping, clean the car, get a job"!!! >:(
I decide to do a quick job on my guitar.....big mistake!! Lots of drilling, glueing, saddle re-positioning!!!! >:(
Anyway, in a moment of relaxation, I went on Youtube and saw EC do this song as a semi-acoustic and I thought " I want to have a go at that"!! So I did! The first time I've ever played it (after fixing guitar) and I spent about2 days getting the instruments where I wanted them. Then another 2 days doing the vocals. This is acyually the first time I did a lot of takes instead of a "one hit wonder". This is also the first time I haven't used pitch adjust on the vocals to get the harmonies, its all me!!
Hope you like it 'cos I do!! 8)

So here I am, 02:30 hours, wife snoring and driving me mad ( she has a cold, bless her!!) so very bad nights sleep. I get up, take the wife to work, (well one of us has too) then I sit down with a coffee, in a dark mood, pick up the Cheapocaster, start noodling, and come up with a very familiar ditty in under 3 hours!
That is what I love about being able to record this stuff now instead of it vanishing into the ether!!
Have a listen and let me know if any of you fancy a go at the vocals, although I dont think it is an exact duplicate of the original.........!!! Maybe we can put a new, old song together????

It becomes increasingly obvious that the production of music is a great help to me, no matter how bad I am feeling!
This morning, while in the shower, I heard a song that is immediately recognisable but was being destroyed by some gasping British girl singer bimbo! I was so angry that I had a strum when I got time this morning. After doing a bit of housework ( being unemployed ) I went back to it this afternoon and put this little piece of the song together. I know it is a bit fast but, man, I love being able to do something like this and let it all go a bit! Howe I wish I could play off some real people, you know just jam around for a while and see what sparks!
Doing this stuff is the best fun a person can have on their own and it is completely legal!!!!
How good is that!
Anyway here is the little piece I put together ( 4 guitar parts, 2 slide parts, Midi bass, piano & drums )

Collaborations / Any takers
« on: September 10, 2010, 04:59:28 PM »
Hi all,

Two very different songs which I really like and, I think, stand alone but need some lyrics and vocals:

Side Chain was to be a test, for trying out side chaining, but I got a bit carried away and after 2 hours tonight I got this little rocker down! The start is all synth and, hopefully, you people with good sound systems will here the side chain effect! There are 3 electric guitar parts on the track.
http://www.ttmbandroom.com/index.php?t=audio_player&song_id=1114

Lite Bite was an attempt to really get to grips with VST's. I think its a nice tune and everything except the electric guitars (4 of them) is a synth and, again, I think it stands alone but needs some lyrics:
http://www.ttmbandroom.com/index.php?t=audio_player&song_id=1113

Could there be any takers out there? If anybody fancies having a go let me know what you need and I will send it.

This is the good part about being out of work!!!!!

Cheers people,

Hi all,
Firstly, apologies for my absence. To be blunt, I have let myself get into a state of despondency and, amongst other things, I lost the will to create music!
Anyway, things happen and life has a great tendency of letting you know there is always someone worse off than you and, having realised that, I decided to climb back into the saddle.
This song is the first thing I have done for what seems like months but I kinda like it and I will be putting some lyrics to it......unless someone else wants to give it a shot?

http://www.ttmbandroom.com/index.php?t=audio_player&song_id=1060

As some of you will know I have some spare time on myhands and I have been finding out about, and teaching myself how to use, some of the technicaltrickery that is Cubase 5.

For instance, the lead guitar riff is converted into a loop that, because of the clever programes, enable timings and such like to be adjusted.
I discovered the method of changing, during the song, some of the insert effects. For instance the organ has a really nice "leslie" effect that comes and goes, just like the real thing!
Anyway, I love learning new things and developing new tricks!!

I started recording it at 09:00 this morning and finished it this arvo.

I think it is a mixture of an EC song ( Promises End I think ) and Crosby, Stills & Nash, hence the country tag!

The song is made up of the following:

3 straight guitar tracks, 2 slide guitar tracks, 1 bass midi, 1 organ midi, 1 snare midi & 5 vocal tracks.

Guys,

I think I might be doing something wrong with this post, but I just have to!!!
I posted a previous version of "if for just one moment" which I have really appreciated your collective feedback on, but I just wasn't happy! I really wanted this song to work because it is a very personal one for me and, because of my unhappiness of how it was turning out, I have re-done the vocals today.
I can honestly say that I have never been as satisfied, or proud, of a piece than I am with this one. In my eyes ( and ears ) it is exactly the song I wanted it to be.
Thanks to all of you for giving me the courage to do this song, without you guys I would have given up on my music a long time ago!!
God bless all of you!

Instruments / guitar set ups
« on: April 25, 2010, 02:15:06 PM »
Hi Guys & Gals!

Well its getting near my birthday and I thought "what do I want"? I have given up on a Fender Strat or Martin D45 but I thought " I've only got an old Strat copy that is close to giving up th eghost so how about another one"??
I haven't got any disposable income so I bought a second hand copy of Ebay which, when I collected it sounded pretty good. The trouble is when I got it home the electrics didn't work!! Doh!!!
Any way I have managed to buy a loaded scratchplate, which I will be fitting, but I thought what about the set up?
That led me to Youtube and a video about setting intonation and I thought "how about trying it out on my old copy", which I did!!!
Magic!! It sounds far better than it ever has and, miracle upon miracle, it stays in tune along the entire neck!!!
Of course then I had to record something and this popped up after about 3 hours:

http://www.ttmbandroom.com/index.php?t=audio_player&song_id=929

When I get the loaded plate I will do the same set up with my replacement guitar and, hopefully, end up with 2 decent instruments!
What a great birthday pressie!!!
